Spring 2023 Issue of MB
The Spring 2023 issue of MB magazine is out now!
This issue looks back at the nearly 65-year history of the storied Miami Beach Convention Center in “What Ali, Nixon and the Circus Have in Common” on page 48 and gives you a glimpse of what’s coming next.
If you visit our world-famous beaches this spring and summer, you may notice a heavier accumulation of sargassum than in previous years. Find out why in “Necessary Nuisance” on page 24 and learn what the county is doing to combat this brown seaweed once it comes ashore.
MB also explores the complex issue of life on the streets in “Homeless at the Beach” on page 32. We shadow caseworkers as they make their rounds and talk to some of the people we encounter along the way.

Celebrate Earth Month
The City of Miami Beach continues to celebrate Earth Month throughout the month of April. Together with community partners, we are hosting events to educate residents, visitors, and staff about the beauty of our environment and the importance of protecting our natural resources.
|
|
|
Sea Turtle Season Is Here!
Sea turtle season runs through October 31. Multiple city departments are collaborating to help protect our favorite marine friends.
To minimize the disturbance to sea turtles and their nests, the city requires the reduction of artificial light sources from properties that may be visible from the beach.
|
|
|
Sargassum
In the coming months, you may notice a heavier influx of sargassum (seaweed) along our shoreline. The city continues to coordinate with Miami-Dade County Parks to safely remove excess seaweed from our beaches. Clean-up crews operate on a daily basis to collect, remove, cut and turn the buildup of seaweed on the water line across our 7.5-mile beach.
Prior to operating heavy machinery, a team surveys for sea turtle nests and hatchlings each morning. Once the survey is complete, beach operations crews proceed to clean the beach until sunset, regardless of tidal conditions.

|
Don't Be Trashy
Over 8,000 lbs of litter enters our water systems every year, which poses serious threats to our water quality and marine life. To help, discard your litter and recycling in marked receptacles.

|
|
#NoFilter
As of January 1, 2023, the City of Miami Beach has banned cigarette smoking and other tobacco products from public beaches and parks as per Ordinance 2022-4509. Fines range from $100 - $500 or up to 60 days in jail.
Up to 98% of cigarette filters are made of plastic fibers, which leads to an estimated 1.69 billion pounds of trash each year and each butt can take up to 10 years to disintegrate.
Let’s all do our part and keep our beautiful city clean!

|

Other than at senior living facilities, a housing provider can’t tell you “no kids allowed”. Even if you feel like you’re hearing that all the time, that is illegal housing discrimination, every time (again, other than in senior housing).
If you are facing discrimination, please take action by calling Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc. at 305.651.HOPE (4673).

Iguana Remediation Program
Iguanas are considered an invasive species in the state of Florida. Without natural predators, these animals have been able to multiply in record numbers — causing significant damage along the entire Florida coastline. Iguanas can destroy residential and commercial landscape and vegetation as well as threaten our native and endangered species. They can also transmit the infectious bacterium Salmonella to humans through contact with water or surfaces contaminated by their feces.
To further enhance remediation efforts, the city has hired several iguana removal contractors to provide removal services on public property, including parks, greenspaces and near waterways, seven days a week in South, Mid, and North Beach areas. Vendors will be posting signage in the vicinity of their work.
Our city will continue to prioritize curbing the iguana population as well as developing strategies for a long-term remediation program. Visit our Iguana Information webpage for more information.
