Greetings!
Can you believe it's almost July 4th? I'd like to get real for a moment, though, if it's okay. We still have a lot of summer left. That means there's still time for you to get into summer shape. If you're having trouble losing those last few stubborn pounds, I have some simple strategies that will help you out. Check out my article: http://irenefross.com/blog/2012/06/seven-ways-to-still-get-into-summer-shape
Does it seem like the entire country has been under a brutal heat wave? A couple of weeks ago I went to an anniversary celebration of Seasonal Health, a wellness center and apothecary owned by holistic physician and clinical director, Dr. Kathia Roberts, ND; D.Phyt,; PhD; NIMH.
While there, I had a couple of very refreshing (non-alcoholic! drinks.) Recipes are below.
"I think some of the reasons that we now hear about so many illnesses is because we've become so disconnected from ancient wisdom," said Vishal Verma, MSA, LAc. Vishal is a specialist in Eastern Medicine and an Ayurvedic practicer with Inner Source Health. He continued, "Many of today's medical treatments don't delve deeply into the person's body and mind so they mask symptoms, than than getting to core problems."
Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India, says there are 3 body types, or doshas--and takes much of the guesswork out of diet and lifestyle and more....See featured story below.
Yours in health,
Irene Ross

COOL OFF WITH THESE REFRESHING DRINKS
Both drinks are simple to make, invigorating, tastes great and have LOTS of healing properties!
LAVENDER LEMONADE
Ingredients:
- Organic, ready-made lemonade (non-organic is also acceptable)
- Water
- Lavender Oil (preferably, essential oils)
- Organic blueberries
Mix 1/2 ready-made lemonade with 1/2 water (doesn't dilute it). Add a drop of lavender oil and a handful of blueberries.
Lavender, part of the mint family, has long been used for its healing properties from depression and anxiety to insomnia and fatigue.
Blueberries are considered to be a super food (high in nutrients), packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Antioxidants are those substances that kill off free radicals. Think of a free radical as rust--and how destructive that substance is...they cause diseases and are responsible for aging us.
CUCUMBER-MINT FLAVORED WATER
Ingredients:
For an energizing, cooling drink, add a few cucumber slices and some mint sprigs to water.
Cucumbers, by the way, have many of the vitamins you need each day; they're also packed with minerals like calcium and magnesium. Cucumbers are also cooling; in fact, 80 degrees will soon feel like 77 degrees after eating one. Mint, a powerhouse of antioxidants, has long been used for digestive problems and even headaches.

ARE YOU KAPHA, PITTA OR VATA?
Ayurveda, or Ayurvedic Medicine, is a medical system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Translated, it literally means: "Science of life and living.
It is a holistic approach to health that is designed to help people live long, healthy, and well balanced lives.
In Ayurveda, there are three fundamental body types or doshas, each a reflection of one or two of the five great elements of nature: space, wind, fire, water and earth. The doshas, called kapha, pitta and vata, rule the body and mind. When the doshas are in balance, the positive characteristics of the ruling elements are emphasized but, when aggravated or out of balance, the negative characteristics come to the forefront; that is when illness--physical, emotional or spiritual--occurs.
"Everything in the universe is made of the five elements, be it the human body, plants and animals and all microbes," said Dr. Aparna Bapat, BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine.). "The food chain sustains life, and as we eat the plants and animals, we get the five elements in different combinations from them and we grow and maintain the health of our physical bodies."
This makes Ayurveda one of the most direct paths to wellness, since it takes much of the guesswork out of things like diet, supplements, exercise, lifestyle behaviors, etc.
"If you know the rules of your dosha, you can easily manage your life," said Dr. Reetu Rudra. "For instance, the Vata dosha is ruled by Air and Space, so the Vata should avoid any foods that are light, cold and dry. Pittas are ruled by Fire, so they should avoid hot and spicy, sour or salty. Kaphas correspond to earth and water; they need to avoid sweets, fats and oils."
Weather and other environmental factors can also throw a dosha out of balance. "I used to live in Seattle, a primarily kapha area," said Vishal Verma, MSA, LAc., who practices Ayurveda at Inner Source Health. Vishal said he saw a lot of kapha imbalances there, such as lethargy and depression.
