Jennifer Nichols/ Archery
Jennifer is the No.1 ranked Female archer in the United States.
Nichols had a triumphant year in 2004,
she became the national indoor champion, Arizona Cup champion and
Italian Grand Prix champion. She won
the 2004 Olympic team trials, finishing with 259 points. At her
first Olympic Games in Athens, Greece,
she reached the women's 1/8 elimination round. In 2003 she was
named the USA Archery Athlete of the
Year for her outstanding performances - including a silver
medalist at the world indoor championships,
ranked first overall individual, first in team at the Pan American
Games and first at U.S. Open. She
was the indoor national champion in 2002 and the target national
champion in 2001. Nichols started
shooting archery when she was 11 years old after her father bought
her a compound bow for Christmas.
Soon after that, her parents acquired bows and they found archery
to be a very enjoyable family sport
and would shoot in their backyard for fun. She was home schooled
by her parents through high school,
graduating in 2002. Nichols currently teaches dance classes as
well as takes classes herself. (10/04)

>>>>-------> OLYMPICS IN BRIEF
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
The 1916 Olympics were scheduled to be held in Berlin, but were
canceled because of what came to be
known as World War I. The 1920 Games were awarded to Antwerp to
honor the suffering that had been
inflicted on the Belgian people during the war. The Opening
Ceremony was notable for the introduction
of the Olympic flag and the presentation of the Athletes' Oath. In
a performance unequaled in Olympic
history, Nedo Nadi of Italy earned gold medals in five of the six
fencing events. Ethelda Bleibtrey
of the United States won gold medals in all three women's swimming
contests. Including preliminary
heats, she swam in five races and broke the world record in every
one. France's Suzanne Lenglen
dominated women's tennis singles so completely that she lost only
four games in the ten sets she
played. At age 72, Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn earned a silver
medal in the team double-shot running
deer event to become the oldest medalist ever. The 1920 12-foot
dinghy sailing event was the only
event in Olympic history to be held in two countries. The first
race was staged in Belgium, but the
last two races took place in the Netherlands because both entrants
were Dutch.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Dear John,
USA Archery recently announced a Transition Regional Coach Course,
scheduled for November 1-7 in Philadelphia, PA. This update is
being sent as a courtesy reminder that the special hotel rate
reserved for this event will expire on October 15. If you have not
yet made hotel arrangements, please do so now in order to secure
this special rate.
The Transition Regional Coach Course combines the information from
the Community and Regional Coach Courses in one class, offering
Intermediate Instructors, Community Coaches, and those who
previously certified as Level 3 or 4, an opportunity to achieve
their Regional Coach designation. This ability to take a "combined
course" also represents a significant savings to those seeking an
increased level of certification.
The upcoming course in Philadelphia is available to any
Intermediate (Level 2) instructor who has held their certification
since 2007 or later, Community Coaches who have held their
certification for a minimum of two years, or a coach who previously
certified as a Level 3 or 4. During this transition period to the
new Coach Education Program (2009-2011), the Transition Regional
Coach Course fee will be reduced from $450 to $250. A special hotel
rate has also been arranged for those participating in this course;
however, all participants should note that hotel rooms must be
reserved prior to October 15 in order to receive the special
rate.
The Philadelphia course will include many exciting components for
registered participants, with expert presenters on Athlete
Development, Sport Science for Archery, Strength and Conditioning,
Archers with Disabilities and the National Training System. The
Community Coach Course will also be taught during the first part of
the week. National Head Coach KiSik Lee, John Crawley of the United
States Olympic Committee's Mental Skills department, Coach
Development Manager Sheri Rhodes, Dr. H. Lee, Steve Cornell and Dee
Falks are currently scheduled to instruct.
The final days of the course will consist of the exam for the
Community Coach Course, and the written and practical exams on the
National Training System. A detailed schedule, along with hotel
information, and the necessary Regional Course Application, may be
downloaded here. Participants may also apply for the USA Archery
Coach Education Grant Program, which offers grants to help offset
travel costs of up to $100, and course fees of $250. Prior approval
of grant applications is required, and reimbursement will be
provided after completion of the course. Click here for grant
application information and criteria. For more information on the
November course or on Coach Education opportunities, contact Sheri
Rhodes: srhodes@usarchery.org.
