THE REVEREND ANDREW ARAKAWA APPOINTED AS CANON FOR MINISTRY FORMATION

I am pleased to inform the Diocese that I am appointing the Reverend Andrew Arakawa as the Canon for Ministry Formation. Andrew will provide oversight of the Waiolaihuiʻia Center for Ministry (WCM) and be the Bishop’s liaison with the Commission on Ministry (assisting in tracking all those in the ordination/licensure process, including helping with evaluations and recommendations) while assisting the Diocesan Support Center to provide clergy continuing education offerings and development.

As part of this position, Andrew succeeds the Reverend Haaheo Guanson, who is retiring as Dean of Waiolaihuiʻia Center for Ministry. She led the WCM through the Pandemic and as opportunities for training in lay ministries expanded. I am deeply grateful to Haaheo and her shepherding of WCM. Andrew and Haaheo were in a first-year WCM class some years ago. While she completed the program leading to ordination, he moved to Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) for his Master in Divinity degree.

Andrew brings a refined sense of contextual understanding to his vocation and a depth of experience working in large, complex-systems. Now in his second year in VTS’s Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program with a focus on formation and educational leadership, he will formally take up this part-time diocesan position on July 1, as he continues in his ministry as Lower School Interim Dean and Chaplain at ʻIolani School.
