Governor Signs VAR Legislation

Governor Glenn Youngkin signed the Virginia REALTORS® legislation! These bills will become law on July 1, 2024, with one exception. The bill bringing the Virginia Residential Landlord Tenant Act back into compliance with the Federal Servicemember Relief Act has already gone into effect.

The General Assembly considered almost 3,600 bills and resolutions. VAR’s legislation passed with nearly unanimous support – total final passage of 2,167 “yes” votes to 33 “no” votes. Special thanks to area Senator David Suetterlein who patroned VAR’s Place of Business bill in the Senate.

Click here for an overview of VAR’s legislation. Watch for more information from VAR to help prepare you for when these new laws are enacted. Questions? Contact VAR’s legislative team at advocacy@virginiarealtors.org.

April is Fair Housing Month

Each April, REALTORS® observe the anniversary of the passage of the 1968 landmark Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or handicap. Article 10 of the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, the 'Fair Housing Article', also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Every April, REALTORS® celebrate Fair Housing Month to reaffirm their continuing commitment to fair and equitable treatment and a professional level of service for all in their search for real property.

Fair Housing protects our livelihood and business as REALTORS®. Fair Housing depends on a free, open market that embraces equal opportunity. In honor of Fair Housing Month, take a moment to review the NAR resources available by clicking here.

NAR Report: Millennials Reclaim Position as Largest Group of Home Buyers

Millennials (ages 25 to 43) have surged ahead to become the largest group of home buyers (at 38%), marking a significant shift in the housing market’s demographic landscape, according to the latest report from the National Association of REALTORS®.

Baby boomers, ages 59 – 77, saw their share decrease to 31%, relinquishing their position as last year’s largest demographic of home buyers. Baby boomers continue to be the largest home-seller generation, accounting for 45% of all sellers in 2023.

Ninety percent of buyers and 87% of sellers indicated they were likely to reuse or refer their agent.
