General Manager's Message

Our customers are role models in valuing water by using it efficiently. The conservation levels Ventura Water’s customers met these past few months are commendable, as reflected in the water production chart above. Our Conservation Team thanks you for participating in the multiple programs we have to offer, and with your positive response the Team continues to receive awards for their messaging. This week I will be traveling to the California Water Environment Association’s annual conference to accept an award for the statewide Community Engagement and Outreach Program of the Year

You can continue to promote Ventura’s water-wise way of life by participating in the Wyland Foundation Mayor’s Challenge. This is Ventura’s chance to show the County how we use water efficiently. As an added bonus, by taking the water pledge you will be eligible to win prizes.

We have hit some milestones this month as well—acceptance of the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan to assist in funding the VenturaWaterPure program and finalization of the State Water Interagency agreement with our United Water and Calleguas Municipal Water District partners. This agreement brings us one step closer to receiving our State Water allocation. Ventura Water’s staff, including featured Principal Civil Engineer, Ron Herbst, is excited to continue working hard for you in our future water planning.

Respectfully,

Gina Dorrington

Ventura Water - In Focus

In our series highlighting the people and processes that keep the City’s water and wastewater systems running efficiently, we’ve flowed from procuring potable (safe to drink) water, to preparing it for distribution. Along the way we’ve mentioned the multitude of assets (e.g., wells, pumps, storage tanks, and treatment facilities) that are integral to these systems. For these City assets to be efficiently utilized they must be designed, constructed, and maintained. To accomplish this requires a lot of civil engineering.

As Ventura Water’s Principal Civil Engineer, Rob Herbst oversees and coordinates the technological work required to maintain the City’s water and wastewater infrastructure. The Public Works Department has a team of three civil engineers dedicated to water and wastewater improvements. Ventura Water has its corps of water and wastewater operators who manage them. Ron is the bridge between those groups, requiring him to articulate technical information in two languages—Water/Wastewater Operations jargon and Engineer-Speak. Fortunately for Ventura Water, sharing technical advice is Ron’s favorite part of his job.

Ron oversees Ventura Water’s Master Plan, created every ten years to assess the effectiveness of the City’s water and wastewater systems. Originating from the Master Plan, nearly all water-related capital improvement projects come across Ron’s desk. He explains that most projects are to rehabilitate the existing infrastructure, including pipelines that may have been in place since the mid-1900s. Outside projects to provide water services to private development must also be reviewed and approved by Ron and his staff.

Effective collaboration between Public Works’ engineers and Ventura Water’s operators is key for projects to smoothly develop from design, to construction, to use. Ron’s technical and communication skills allow him to help bridge the gap between a well-founded plan and a well-functioning system.

Next month we will look at how our precious potable water supply travels from our treatment facilities to our customers, by way of the reliable work of Ventura Water’s Distribution Team.

Wastewater Pollutant Series:

Personal Care and Cleaning Products

This, the last entry in our wastewater pollutant series, discusses pollutants that can be found inside your own home. Personal care and cleaning products are consumer goods that are used regularly or even daily. Many of these products can contain Contaminants of Emerging Concern, or CECs, that pollute wastewater, enter our waterways and have detrimental effects on aquatic and terrestrial life. Dyes, fragrance (perfumes) and various surfactants can all be sources of CECs.

Unfortunately, these contaminants can bypass conventional wastewater treatment systems and accumulate in our water sources. Though scientists and regulators are working hard to find solutions to these pollutants, you can do your part by using only the amounts of personal care and cleaning products necessary and purchasing eco-friendly products with natural ingredients. You can even go one step further by purchasing products that boast the seal of third-party certifications, like the EPA’s Safer Choice Standard.

Next time you grab your favorite laundry detergent or specialty face cream, take a moment to check how your products measure up. Because what we send down the drain matters. To properly dispose of unused cleaning products head to one of our free monthly Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. For more information visit our website and remember to only flush the 3 Ps–pee, poo, and (toilet) paper.

Gardening Series

Creating a Pollinator Garden

Did you know that pollinators are responsible for one of every three bites of food we take? Agriculture in California is particularly dependent on the work that bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, small mammals and other species perform.

In our next Gardening Series class learn from a Master Gardener how to create a pollinator garden in your own yard. This free class will be held at Green Thumb Nursery at 1899 S. Victoria Ave., on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 10:00am-11:30am. Reserve your spot here.
