Keeping Up with Code Changes— Emergency Disconnects

Soon, Montgomery County, Maryland will adopt building code changes. Most will apply to home renovations. Some will be costly. And we’re tracking them all!

Here is a look at the Emergency Disconnects change, and the impact it may have on your project.

Description: An emergency electrical service disconnect is required in a readily accessible outdoor location to turn the power off to your home. This is a great safety feature, so first responders can turn the power off to your home as soon as they arrive.

Impact | Low-Medium: The change also introduces major security concerns. Anyone could come up to your home and just shut off power with the flip of a lever. Without backup power, your alarm system, WiFi, or other security measures could be cut off. Obviously, this will also add cost to your electrical work to have it installed.

Transforming an Outdated Deck into a Backyard Oasis

When homeowners in Vienna, Virginia wanted to replace their outdated deck, we used the lush trees and natural beauty of the backyard as inspiration to create a new outdoor space.

We removed the deteriorating deck and crafted a new structure finished with Wolf Silver Teak composite decking and Blue Steel powder-coated, stainless-steel railings. Replacing two windows with an oversized sliding glass door completed the uninterrupted views. Updating the gas and electricity revitalized the function of the space to create an enchanting backyard oasis.
