School of Medicine Update

April 2024 Edition

5 students (4 women and 1 man) in the class of 2024 hold "We Matched!" signs for a variety of residencies. They are smiling in front of a Wayne State University School of Medicine backdrop.

Acting Internships and M4 Evaluations Get a Much Needed Update!

We've heard your feedback! We've made evaluations easier than ever! We've streamlined our evaluations to make them shorter and easier to fill out. Now, you won't have to scroll through multiple questions to find what's relevant to you and the student. Read on to see what's changed!

Our Acting Internships (previously Sub-Internships) have a new and improved evaluation! In an effort to encourage students to think about these AIs as opportunities for growth and development rather than just a grade on their transcript, we're asking students to use these evaluations to get feedback they can use throughout their internship.

As such, we'll be asking students to complete more evaluations throughout the month in a point of care assessment style.

Don't worry, though! We've made it easier for YOU to choose the relevant questions so you can fill out only what's important for each situation and student. We'll ask you to choose the relevant EPAs to evaluate the student's medical knowledge, as well as a few key questions on professionalism and student behaviors. We encourage you to be thorough in your comments, as this is where the students really gain the information to grow, and we know from focus groups that this is the first thing they check when they get an evaluation back.

The evaluation uses the modified Ottawa Scale to assess the independence the Acting Internship student demonstrates in performing the EPA.

It is not necessary that the student receive all perfect marks—it is much more important that they receive honest feedback as to their current level. They can still get an Honors for their grade if they are still developing expertise and independence. Personal growth is our best outcome.

We're even taking the onus off of you to determine the students' grade! At the end of the month, we'll review your feedback to determine if the student gets Satisfactory or Honors for the rotation. As always, please contact us in advance if students are performing unsatisfactorily. All you have to do is be honest and descriptive in your questions and comments, and we'll do the rest!

Clinical Vs. Non-Clinical Electives

The School of Medicine has traded our old evaluation form for our other M4 electives, too. We've upgraded to have one form for clinical electives and one for non-clinical electives.

Click Here to See the New M4 Clinical Electives Evaluation

This evaluation form includes questions for all clinical electives. You'll see some familiar queries about student behavior, professionalism, medical knowledge, and patient care, without having to skip questions that are more closely related to non-clinical electives.

Click Here to See the New M4 Non-Clinical Electives Evaluation

This evaluation form covers non-clinical electives, research electives, and online electives. You will no longer have to scroll past clinical questions to get to relevant questions about these electives. We still expect comments on professionalism, goals, and assignments, but the rest is more specific to the type of elective you're evaluating.

We Need Learning Coaches! Will You Volunteer?

The Class of 2026 has just started their third year, and we have an exciting opportunity for residents and faculty like you to engage in their learning!

We are seeking individuals to coach students for the 2024/25 academic year.

For those who have coached previously, thank you! Your commitment to the success of our student doctors does not go unnoticed!

In this role, you will coach 3 - 5 students and be responsible for:

  • Meeting with your coaching group at least 6x/year (once per clerkship)
  • Discussing students' CLiF Tool assignments (reflections on their clerkship experience)
  • Using the list of suggested activities to expand the student clerkship experience
  • Building a coaching relationship
  • Creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for the students
  • Guiding professionalism, continuous learning and improvement, and professional identity formation and development

We still need a few volunteers to make this a success!
