RYAN JOINS OPELIKA MAIN STREET BOARD

Jennifer Ryan, Communications Manager for Auburn University Outreach’s Government & Economic Development Institute (GEDI), has been elected to the Opelika Main Street Board of Directors for a term of three years. Since her appointment in January, Ryan has been active on the promotions and economic vitality committees.

“I have been a supporter of Opelika Main Street for years and have taken part in many of its events and initiatives. I think downtowns are the core of any community’s vitality, and I am incredibly honored to serve on the board of Opelika Main Street,” Ryan said. “Opelika’s downtown continues to grow and has become a vibrant location for businesses and citizens to thrive. I am proud to be an Opelika resident and excited about the economic and community development successes our city is experiencing,” Ryan added.

Main Street is a nationally recognized program that uses the National Main Street Center’s Four Point Approach to revitalize downtown areas. The four points are organization, economic vitality, design and promotion. Main Street's approach is unique because its guiding principles are different from other redevelopment strategies. These principles include a comprehensive approach, incremental projects, community involvement and a strong public-private partnership.

Opelika Main Street is a Designated Community through Main Street Alabama and is accredited through the National Main Street Center. Opelika's Main Street program began in 1987. GEDI’s Director, Jeremy Arthur, is the President-Elect of Alabama Main Street and will assume the President position in May.

OLLI Class Visits Hydroelectric Dam

Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) course, Rivers of Alabama, recently toured the Thurlow Hydroelectric Generating Plant in Tallassee, Alabama. OLLI instructor Bill Deutsch arranged the field trip in addition to inviting guest speaker Chris Goodman, a Hydro Manager for Alabama Power, to present to the class. Goodman provided an overview of the history of hydropower in Alabama and its increasing value among renewable energy sources. Located on the Tallapoosa River, the Thurlow plant has the capacity to generate 81,000 kW of power. After a safety briefing, OLLI members were led on a tour along the reservoir and inside the plant.

Dr. Deutsch has a particular affinity for water. He retired as a Research Fellow, Emeritus in the AU School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Science and as Alabama Water Watch director emeritus. An ever-popular OLLI course, the Rivers of Alabama class previously visited the Yates Dam also on the Tallapoosa River. For more information about OLLI at Auburn, Click Here
