Test Your Pressure Canner Dial Gauge for Safely Canning Foods
For safe processing of low-acid foods such as meats, poultry, fish, game and vegetables, home pressure dial gauges must be tested yearly to ensure accuracy.
The dial gauge should also be tested if it has been bumped or dropped. If the dial gauge is inaccurate by more than two pounds, Extension Professionals and the National Center for Home Food Preservation recommend replacement. If the dial gauge is off by two pounds or less, an adjustment can be made.

Ask the Family Educator
by Maxine Cohen, Parent Educator
What is a good activity that promotes family bonding in springtime?
There is a no better hands-on activity for parents and children in spring than working together in the garden. Experiencing nature together and learning how plants grow are both educational and enriching activities.
Gardening engages all of our senses, for young and older alike. Visiting a garden center stimulates your children’s senses and affords opportunities to learn concepts of size, colors, and fragrances. Research shows that sensory experiences stimulate brain development and enhance creativity.
Gardening outdoors promotes healthy physical activity. As children help in planting seeds and plants and pulling out weeds, their curiosity is piqued, and they develop fine muscle coordination skills.
Research shows that children who help in growing vegetables and fruits are more likely to eat these foods after harvesting them. They take pride in this miracle of creation. If you have a particularly abundant harvest, sharing with family and friends in your community teaches the important concepts of generosity and caring for others.
As your family works together in nature, know that you inspiring your children to appreciate our natural environment, and stimulating their mental, physical, and emotional development. Have fun gardening and watch your children blossom along with the flowers!

2024 Seafood Expo North America
The Fisheries team had a blast at the 2024 Seafood Expo North America in Boston, tabling in support of their Monkfish Marketing Initiative!
The American goosefish, better known as monkfish, has a mug only a mother could love, but an out-of-this-world taste worthy of five-star restaurants. With meat that’s mild-tasting and firm, it is often likened to lobster.
In collaboration with industry organizations, the Monkfish Marketing Initiative seeks to increase consumption of and demand for monkfish through product development and audience expansion. A historically weak foreign market and a lack of domestic demand has resulted in a boom in Monkfish population, making this delicious fish a more economical and sustainable choice than ever before!
Monkfish is local to the Northeast US, where the Expo took place - thus, all dishes available for tasting at the CCE booth were locally sourced from Northeast monkfish fishermen, and processed by Northeast seafood companies. Offerings included Monkfish Sliders from Tony’s Fresh Seafood of Rhode Island, Monkfish Seafood Salad from Gra-Bar & Barnegat's Best Seafood, Monkfish Curry from The Plenus Group (PGI) & Red Best, and Monkfish Stew from Maine Coast Fishermen's Association. Attendees also learned more ways to utilize monkfish, such as the preparation of Japanese ‘ankimo’ using the monkfish’s liver, and scratch fish broth that utilizes the monkfish’s large head.

We extend a heartfelt appreciation to our partners for their generous donations and collaborative efforts, which played a crucial role in making this trip possible:

Shellfish Education at Taste NY
Aquaculture & Shellfish Restoration Specialist Harrison Tobi was at Taste NY in Albany to share the history and significance of the shellfish aquaculture industry on Long Island, highlighting its economic importance and environmental benefits.
Harrison also highlighted the various benefits of aquaculture, including water quality improvement through oysters' consumption of algae and nitrogen, the promotion of biodiversity through aquaculture gear acting as artificial reefs, as well as job creation and economic revenue for local Long Island communities.
Long Island oysters are delicious and diverse in shapes and flavors, making the potential for the industry to rival other states, such as Connecticut, extremely possible. Overcoming or finding solutions to the current hurdles facing the Long Island shellfish aquaculture industry will help ensure the industry's success.
Pictured with Harrison is Julie Suarez, Director of Translational Research Programs and Associate Dean for Land-Grant Affairs at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.

Stewardship Session: Oyster Shell Bags
Friday, May 3, 2024, 3:30 PM 5:00 PM
Help our Aquaculture Coordinator create bags of oyster shells for our spat-on-shell oyster reef restoration projects!
Bags of cured oyster + clam shells are used to set baby oysters onto, which is called spat-on-shell, or SOS. The SOS is then used to build oyster reefs at our various Stewardship Sites.
The volunteer time will entail: cutting and tying mesh to create bags; shoveling cured shell into the bags; neatly stacking bags off to the side. Gloves can be provided, but we encourage you to bring your own. Expect to get mildly wet and/or dirty, depending on conditions.
This is a great opportunity for high school students to get service hours!
