Report from our 2018 Symposium

We were all worried that the changing weather patterns were going to derail our symposium on changing weather patterns, but in the end the snow storm was minor and more than 40 people joined us to discuss low-impact development (LID).

Speakers discussed what we can learn from successful projects including the Jordan Cove subdivision, LID projects at UConn, and stormwater management strategies in New Haven. David Sousa of CDM Smith also reinforced the important point that the best way to minimize impact is through design. A walkable, mixed-use building is going to reduce the need for paved areas, which is far easier than adding pervious pavement and bioswales after the fact. For those who would like to download the Presentations, they are available on our website here.
Meet Our Grantees: Brainerd Library

With the Connecticut River running just outside the property, Brainerd Library has prioritized educating patrons about the history and importance of the river. Through a series of lectures and workshops at the library, supported in part by a grant from the Rockfall Foundation, Brainerd will highlight the variety and diversity of wildlife, ecology, and plant life in the Connecticut River watershed and help inspire individuals to advocate for the care of this important region.

The workshops include presentations on the history, ecology, and geology of the river, edible plants, nature writing, and coming up next, a discussion of birds of prey of the Connecticut River region.
