Did you know that April is Occupational Therapy Month? Occupational Therapy (OT) is one of three outpatient therapy services provided through our Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility (CORF). OT is defined as "therapy based on engagement in meaningful activities of daily life, such as self-care skills, education, work, or social interaction." OT addresses daily tasks that a child or adult may encounter, such as getting dressed or picking up a pencil. Using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, such as a sensory room, an adapted gaming center, suspended equipment, and assistive technology, our OT staff strive to provide personalized therapy plans that truly put the "fun" in functional!
Wendell Foster is honored to recognize OT Month as a way to educate the community on the many ways OT improves lives every single day. We are so thankful for our team of OT Difference Makers who empower those we serve to accomplish life-changing goals.
Keep reading to learn more about the impact of OT on those we serve!

Josh's Rock Garden
Josh wanted to honor the life of friend and fellow WF resident, Denise Parker, who passed away in 2023. With the help of his Occupational Therapist, Samantha, he started a rock garden in Denise's memory. Using his communication device, he picked the paint colors for the rocks, increasing his assistive technology and communication skills. Samantha said Josh also worked on his range of motion by hand-painting the rocks, and by sequencing the steps of rock painting, he improved his executive functioning skills.

Jamie's Home Programming
Most people know that attending therapy appointments helps set one up for success, but many forget that what you do at home in between appointments makes a huge difference. Jamie takes her home programming very seriously! She benefits from both written and visual reminders, and uses a check-off schedule to complete daily responsibilities. Because of her consistency, Jamie is now a more active participant in her home including helping with laundry, cooking, gardening, and feeding the birds. Jamie says checking off her completed tasks makes her happy, and her family is impressed with her motivation!

Whitesville Lions Club Pie Auction 🥧
A Sweet Evening!
| |
Wow, what a fantastic evening at the Whitesville Lions Club Chili Supper & Pie Auction! It's always heartwarming to see the community come together to support Wendell Foster and Puzzle Pieces at the Pie Auction, and this year was no different. There were pies, cakes, and sweets galore! Watching the crowd bid was so exciting, with a carrot cake even going for $1,700! 😲 We'd like to thank all who donated desserts in honor of Wendell Foster, especially our Recreation Department. They teamed up with residents to bake an astounding 20 desserts! This is a labor of love, and we are so appreciative of those who donated their time to bake these tasty treats.
We truly loved every minute of this event, and we are so grateful to have the support of the Whitesville Lions Club each year. Thank you for all you do for our mission! You are #WFDifferenceMakers! 💙

A Total Eclipse of the Heart 🌑🌞 | |
Wendell Foster residents and staff came out in full force to view the 2024 solar eclipse in the Sensory Park! To mark this commemorative occasion, Wendell Foster's Rewards & Recognition Committee provided special eclipse sunglasses and a variety of sun and moon-themed snacks, including Sun Chips, Moon Pies, Sunkist, and Capri Sun. Everyone waited anxiously for the big moment and watched as the moon progressively covered the sun and the sky got darker. At 2:04 pm, totality began, with just a tiny sliver of the sun showing. It was a sight to see...with glasses on, of course!
Thank you to our staff for ensuring that our residents witnessed this historic event, and the R&R Committee for making the day fun for everyone on campus! 😎
