Samantha Durfee
Witness a giant portable printing press in action on April 1 and 2.

Watch the Big Tuna, a portable print press whose size inspired its name, reel off large-scale woodblock prints carved by local artists on Saturday and Sunday at A.P.E. Ltd, 126 Main Street in Northampton.

BIG INK LLC, a New England-based art education company, is teaming up with A.P.E. Ltd. for a second time. A group of artists started carving monumental woodblocks in February using traditional Japanese chisels. BIG INK Director Lyell Castonguay has been guiding them through the process via online instruction.

"Seeing woodblocks printed at this scale is impressive," states Lyell Castonguay, BIG INK's
Founding Director. "It's like magic. The woodblock is inked, sent through the press, and an
image appears on the paper."

BIG INK raised over $15,000 in capital to build a traveling print shop in 2016. They now tour the country, hosting dozens of workshops in partnership with museums, universities, art centers, and galleries.

The event will be open from 11 AM to 4 PM on April 1 and 2, where visitors can see up-close printing demonstrations.

The slate will feature appearances by GALA member Samantha Durfee, Iwalani Kaluhiokalani, Molly Paul, Kate Ricketson, Richard Deon, Kevin Berube, and Nancy Doniger on Saturday.

Sunday's artists are Alison Friedlin, Jessica McKeon, Heather Kasunick, Kevin Cross, Peter
Cangialosi, and Dara Herman-Zierlein.

Admission is free.

Lynn Zimmerman Watercolor Workshop
Bellows Falls, VT
The Saxtons River Art Guild announces a one day workshop given by Lynn Zimmerman on Saturday, April 15 at the United Church of Bellows Falls, 8 School Street, Bellows Falls, VT, from 9:30am-3:30pm. The workshop fee is $70 for SRAG members and $90 for non-members. There will be coffee and tea available, please bring a lunch.

The workshop theme is “Negative Painting in Watercolor”. This all-new workshop will feature ways of working to build paintings that preserve the beautiful luminosity of watercolor. We will experiment with some wet-on-wet techniques in ways that build intense color and bright lights, using paints fresh from the tube to ensure rich color when working with lots of water. Negative painting is not always an intuitive way to paint, so we need to practice. We will use methods to paint around the light areas of our paintings and allow them to glow. At least some experience with watercolor will be helpful. A list of suggested supplies will be sent upon registration. For more information, email Lynn at To register for the workshop, email Carolyn at

Masks and COVID-19 vaccinations are required to attend the SRAG workshops.

Lynn Zimmerman is excited by color and the beauty of natural things and she combines those in her work in watercolor, oil, acrylic, gouache, colored pencil, and ink painting. Her works show her love of detail as well as a grasp of the bigger sweep of life and light. Lynn studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Rhode Island School of Design. She has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for more than 30 years. Lynn offers instruction in watercolor, oil, and gouache painting as well as drawing, book arts, and collage. Her emphasis is always on gently supporting each student along his or her creative journey.
