Understand, Learn, and Do!
Understand
Why May? According to Asian Pacific Heritage.gov, the month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
Learn
Often seen as a monolithic “model minority,” it's important to first understand that “Employment and economic status among members of the AAPI community are also far from uniform: While some AAPI subpopulations are heavily concentrated in higher-wage professional and management occupations, others are heavily concentrated in lower-wage service occupations.”
The AAPI community consists of more than 50 ethnic groups, grouped together as a demographic purely because of vague geographic borders; it’s impossible to capture a singular “Asian-American experience.” To get more insights:
- Read a book by an AAPI Author
- Watch a movie by an AAPI director
Do
Get involved with your community by giving back or hosting an event.
- Make a contribution to an AAPI organization or non-profit
- Host a discussion featuring AAPI Leaders
- Building authentic relationships with AAPI colleagues
- Support AAPI businesses by purchasing products and services
