Aviantion Open Cockpit Day

Close encounters of aviation excitement are ramping up in Middle River for the first of two 2024 Open Cockpit Days at the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum at Martin State Airport.The Museum welcomes aboard visitors on its shuttle busses to transport them to the outdoor airplanes where imaginations take flight. Visitors board a Martin Company 1952 404 passenger plane where memories of past flights may be recalled by older visitors. See into cockpits of a B-57 aircraft built by the Martin Company, also a Huey helicopter, and 1950's fighter planes and other aircraft. Children will discover aviation STEM when they see up close the various sizes and designs of wings and propellers that assist keeping an airplane flying.
The last shuttle bus to the airplanes departs at 1:30pm. Museum exhibit galleries in Hangar 5 remain open until 3pm. Admission to this special event is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Rain date is Saturday, May 4. Attend this exciting experience to create and capture new memories when discovering Maryland's aviation history.

Maryland Home and Garden Pilgrimage (MHGP) is having a Towson Home and Garden Tour on Sunday, April 28th and is looking for homes and/or gardens to be included on the tour. The primary purpose of MHGP is the preservation and restoration of architecturally and historically significant properties in the State of Maryland and they have raised and distributed well over one million dollars towards this mission. Beneficiaries of past tours in our area have included the St. John's Church on Bellona Avenue and the Lake Roland Valve House.

Steam Show at the Fire Museum

| See real steam engines in action at the annual Steam Show at the Fire Museum. Try pumping a real hand-drawn engine, just like firefighters from days gone by. Take a ride in a horse-drawn firehose wagon. Kids games and activities. The show is in the Museum's front parking lot. April is Maryland Archaeology Month, and we are pleased to bring you our annual Archaeo Expo. Archaeology has played an integral role in NHSM's 95-year history. We are home to many artifacts that help trace the cultural story of the land we now call Maryland.
Join us for a day of learning with exhibits, activities, crafts and presentations. Be sure to check out our developing Ice Age exhibit featuring the woolly mammoth!
At 3:00, Dr. Zachary Singer will deliver the keynote speech on Paleoindians in Maryland.

The Fire Museum is holding a special mid-week opening on Thursday, April 25. This is a one day event. Enjoy family fun at the Museum: See more than 40 fire engines, and see how technology evolved from leather buckets and hand-drawn engines to the mighty machines of today. Watch a fire-alarm office demo. Kids love our interactive Discovery Room, where they can dress up in pint-sized turnout gear and climb on a real Mack fire engine. Tickets at the door.

War of 1812 Chanteymen and “All Arms” outdoor living history. The singers of the Ship’s Company Chanteymen will perform sets of 1812 era sea chanteys, rousing songs sung in four-part harmony, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Living history experts will demonstrate the lives of soldiers and sailors at the time of the War of 1812.

WWII Women Honored with Congressional Gold Medal
Everything was Rosie in Washington DC on April 10 as the working women of World War II
from across the country were collectively awarded a Rosie the Riveter Congressional Gold Medal. Baltimore's Rosie Chapter members attended for supporting their traveling Rosie, 99 year old Susan King who worked as a riveter at Eastern Aircraft in Baltimore. 24 Rosies were in attendance at Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitors Center, the oldest being 106 years old! Congratulations ladies on a national honor very much deserved. Susan was featured on the April 6 CBS Saturday Morning News when a CBS news crew did an interview at the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum, available to watch on that program's video links for that date. The Gold Medal Ceremony can be viewed on CSPAN.

100 Milestone
Maryland Rosies are turning 100 this year, all but Susan having worked at the Glenn L. Martin Company; Marie Beard and Helen Rathbun have already reached 100 in 2024, Virginia Cassidy of Bowleys Quarters turns 100 the last week of April, and Middle River's Mary Jones reaches 104 in August. Answer: The first record of a fire extinguisher goes all the way back to England in 1723. Ambrose Godfrey, a chemist at the time, created a fire suppressant chemical solution that was expelled quickly using gunpowder. A new concept was later invented also in England by George William Manby in 1816.
