Happy Hearts

Happy Hearts began in 2003, in loving memory of Heather Nugent, who was tragically killed in a car accident in October of 2002, two days before her 18th birthday.

Her father Skip Nugent, owner of Best Buy Markets, created Happy Hearts to honor his daughter and support Children's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Each April, customers purchase Happy Heart icons for $1 at Best Buy Markets in Hanford, Visalia, and Lemoore. It's a lead-in to "Happy Hearts Days" in which 5 percent of store sales go to the PICU. Skip also moves his desk to the parking lot and won't leave until he raises $5,000.

Let's Open the Doors!
Jim MeinertGreetings!

Finally, the day we've all been waiting for is almost upon us.

On Thursday, May 19, Children's Hospital will open the doors to the new Paramount Farms Plaza. This 60,000 square-foot addition will significantly expand the Hospital's Emergency Department while adding two new operating rooms and eight new treatment rooms in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Imaging Center will also receive a third MRI room and another diagnostic X-ray suite.

This much needed expansion will help us meet the continually growing healthcare needs of our children for years to come. And it was made possible by you, the generous supporters of Children's Hospital.

Construction of the Paramount Farms Plaza was funded in large part through the ongoing Campaign for Children's initiative. To date, we've raised over $38 million towards the $42 million fundraising goal, which will also help support The Guilds Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Endowment, the Willson Heart Center, and the Endowment for Excellence.

The finish line is in sight, and we need your help to get there. By donating today, you can help us turn the lights on at the Paramount Farms Plaza. Donations of $1,000 or more will be recognized on the new donor wall located in the Plaza lobby.

The grand opening ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on May 19, and all Children's Hospital supporters are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Jim's First Name

"Wicked"-ly Wonderful Witches
Wicked CakeOver a thousand generous friends and supporters of the Guilds of Children's Hospital Central California turned out for the Valley premiere of the smash Broadway musical "Wicked" on April 6, bringing in more than $135,000 to benefit The Guilds Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Endowment.

"It was a beautiful event and went off without a hitch," said Teresa Fierro, Guild manager. "The tremendous support from all the sponsors, attendees and the Guilds who care about our Valley's kids is what made it so successful."       Read More...      View Photos...

Injury Prevention Begins with Education

Injury Prevention

As the weather gets warmer, kids get more active. Soon, children across the Valley will be running, jumping, swimming, and climbing to their hearts' content. While it's important to let kids be kids, it's even more important to make sure their next play session doesn't end up in the emergency room.

Every year Children's Hospital Central California treats countless kids for traumatic injuries, many of which could have been avoided.

"We don't call them accidents," said Mary Jo Quintero, pre-hospital liaison nurse at Children's Hospital. "Accidents can't be avoided and these injuries can."

Foundation Introduces Legacies of Healing Society
planned giving

The Children's Hospital Foundation has created an exclusive membership program to recognize a very special group of donors. It's called the Legacies of Healing Society, and it's reserved for those who have made a provision in their estate plan for a gift to Children's Hospital.

The Society is open to anyone wishing to partner with the Hospital in a substantial way through his or her estate. It provides us an opportunity to recognize a donor's commitment to a hospital that's given so much to our community.     Read More...
