April Climate Solutions Caucus Round-Up

Dear Stakeholder,

Please see below for highlights from April and a preview of what’s to come.

April Engagement:

Co-Chairs Garbarino and Houlahan spoke virtually and in-person with members of the Land Trust Alliance during their annual D.C. Advocacy Days. (Left) Co-Chair Houlahan provides virtual remarks kicking-off the Land Trust Alliance Advocacy Day. (Right) Co-Chair Garbarino joins Land Trust Alliance President and CEO Andrew Bowman in person for the Advocacy Day.

  • Co-Chairs Garbarino and Houlahan discussed the importance of natural climate solutions in combatting the negative impacts of climate change with members of the Land Trust Alliance during their annual D.C. Advocacy Days.

The Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Energy, Bipartisan Policy Center, and Breakthrough Energy convened for two mini-panels to help staffers learn about underground carbon storage.

  • Staffers attended a panel event on underground carbon storage, Class VI well permitting, and state primacy. They heard from Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency experts about geologic carbon storage, its potential as a climate solution, and the permitting processes involved in safely deploying its associated infrastructure. Staffers were also joined by the Bipartisan Policy Center and Breakthrough Energy, who discussed the policy landscape, remaining challenges, and legislative opportunities associated with geologic carbon storage.

Carbon180, the National Farmers Union, and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition discussed carbon management in the Farm Bill with caucus staffers.

  • In late April, staffers gathered for a panel discussion on carbon management and the Farm Bill, including existing programs and incentives, challenges, and bipartisan opportunities to bolster carbon-storing land management strategies in the upcoming bill. Panelists included Carbon180, the National Farmers Union, and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.

Looking Ahead:

In May, Members plan to gather for a discussion on climate and national security centered on hardening strategies for defense-critical energy infrastructure.

Caucus staffers plan to meet virtually for a presentation of on-the-ground stories of successful natural climate solutions implementation from across the country.

As always, stakeholders are encouraged to approach the Climate Solutions Caucus with priorities and engagement ideas as the 2024 programmatic calendar continues to develop.
