Pension Action Center's early leaders reflect on history of 'concrete victories' | |
As the Gerontology Institute’s Pension Action Center (PAC) celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024, it counts more than $70 million in retirement benefits recovered for more than 11,000 clients across its service area of New England and Illinois.
Ellen Bruce launched and led the center for its first two decades. Bruce hired Jeanne Medeiros, who served as PAC's managing attorney for 15 years and stepped in as director for four years. The two women know well the satisfaction of doing work that truly makes an impact in people’s lives.

More than 250 guests attended a “Summit to Fight Fraud” organized by the Gerontology Institute’s Pension Action Center at UMass Boston on March 19, 2024. The event, sponsored by Investor Protection Trust and co-presented by the Massachusetts Securities Division, featured multiple panels with experts on best practices for avoiding fraud and scams. The hybrid event allowed for in-person sessions as well as remote attendance. | |

Hernandez appointed to coalition studying dementia care strategies for City of Boston | |
The Boston Public Health Commission has named UMass Boston gerontology doctoral student Adriana Hernandez to its Boston BOLD Stakeholder Coalition. Hernandez, who holds the university’s inaugural Frank Caro Scholarship for Social Justice in Aging, will help shape the City of Boston’s efforts to meet the needs of residents at highest risk of dementia and who bear the largest burden of dementia caregiving—specifically African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, and low-income residents. | |
