MOBILITY MONDAY

I’m thrilled to share some amazing news! In March 2024, the Broward MPO landed a $2 million SMART Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. What does this mean for us? It's a big win that will kickstart the creation of SMART METRO - a cutting-edge project that brings together all sorts of information to build a virtual model, or Digital Twin, of Broward County. Imagine having a high-tech map that not only shows our roads and transportation but also paints a picture of how our community lives, moves, and grows.  With Deloitte Consulting jumping on board, we're crafting this virtual world to tackle real-world issues. From fighting climate change to affordable housing to improving mobility and creating jobs, SMART METRO will be our guide to making smarter, fairer decisions that benefit everyone. And guess what? We're just getting started. By July 2024, Deloitte will lay down the blueprint, and from there, we're rolling up our sleeves to build a prototype that tests out ideas on how to revitalize neighborhoods and connect them better. By the end of 2025, this prototype will come alive, opening doors to endless possibilities for making our county a better place to live, work, and play. And we're not stopping there – we're already dreaming bigger, thinking of ways to expand this project to reach more people and places. Get ready to be part of this groundbreaking journey. Together, we're not just planning for the future; we're actively building it. Let's stay motivated, keep pushing forward, and make history with SMART METRO. Stay tuned for more updates on this game-changing project!

SW/SE 17th St Mobility Hub Project

Receives Resolution of Support

The Broward MPO, in partnership with the City of Fort Lauderdale, has successfully received a resolution of support for a locally preferred concept for the SW/SE 17th St Mobility Hub. At the April 16th Fort Lauderdale City Commission Meeting, MPO staff Christopher Restrepo and Karen Friedman were in the audience as the City Commission discussed project details and voted to endorse a resolution supporting a locally preferred conceptual design for the segment of SW/SE 17th Street from SW 9th Avenue to US-1. The conceptual plan calls for capital improvements to provide safe and comfortable access from existing and future transit to residential areas, a school, a park, a hospital, and businesses. The concept proposes to implement vertically separated, raised bike lanes on each side of 17th Street, with a landscape strip separating the bike lanes and the sidewalk to provide a buffer between travel modes and an opportunity for planting shade trees. The project also proposes the construction of a raised pedestrian crosswalk and raised intersections that will serve as traffic calming measures for motorists and safety and accessibility measures for pedestrians. The project will also provide additional transit amenities such as enhanced bus shelters, lighting, wayfinding, and functional landscaping. With this endorsement, MPO staff can finalize the pre-design package and move the project forward into design later this year.
