This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to a new fact sheet from the REMS TA Center on Hate Speech and Bullying, provides a final chance to register for the May 8th session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™, and promotes the upcoming Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations classes.

REMS TA Center New Fact Sheet on Hate Speech and Bullying

The Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center has released a new fact sheet on Hate Speech and Bullying. According to the fact sheet, "22 percent of students ages 12–18 reported being bullied, 7 percent reported being called hate-related words, and 23 percent reported seeing hate-related graffiti at school in 2019." The fact sheet lists protected characteristics and types of bulling, as well as discussing taking a proactive approach by developing a bullying annex for the school's emergency operations plans.

Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™
 May 8th in Springfield

This is the last chance to register for the Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ class on May 8th being held in Springfield, IL.

BDTA™ integrates Safer Schools Together’s Digital Threat Assessment® training and best practice from the National Threat Assessment Center’s Behavioral Threat Assessment model. BDTA™ includes a 3-step response plan developed to help S/TA teams ensure all worrisome, concerning, and threat-related behaviors are proactively responded to, reducing the potential of violence within your community. The training will examine techniques for identifying and assessing individuals who engage in behaviors consistent with a threat and provide S/TA teams with the tools to ensure a thorough data collection process. Additionally, the training will provide an overview of the assessment process, including best practices for interviewing and progress monitoring. Participants will obtain the tools vital for proactively and effectively identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome and/or threat-related behavior through a BDTA™ management lens.

Upcoming Session of Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations May 20-21 in Kankakee

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce a session of the Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations class will be held May 20-21, 2024, in Kankakee, IL. Class objectives include:

• Why it is important NOT to disregard information given to LEO or school officials.
• What the term "Leakage" means and how we can interpret the information.
• Learn free and open source online investigative tools into social networks and App generated phone numbers.
• Learn to identify and collect cyber evidence to identify suspects.
• Learn the three-step process in investigating internet crimes.
• Learn the importance of Preservation, Exigent Circumstances, and Search Warrants.
• Learn how to obtain IP's, screen names, screen captures, and email headers.
• State laws: Terrorist Threat, Falsely Making a Terrorist Threat, Swatting, and Causing a Catastrophe.
• Suspect search warrant, arrest, interrogation, and mental health evaluation.
• Examine a successful cyber-crime case study investigation from start to finish.

2024 ILSROA School Safety Conference June 19-21 in Normal

The 2024 ILSROA School Safety Conference is being held June 19-21st in Normal, IL. The registration fee for the 3-day conference is $240, which includes all training materials, several meals, and a 1-year ILSROA membership. For school administrators and school district personnel, there is a 1-day pass for June 19th for $100, which includes all training for June 19th and lunch. Additionally, this year there is also a special, free pre-conference 8-hour session of Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations the day before the Conference begins (this is an optional add-on session being held at Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois).
