Public, College Community Invited to Participate in Walk for Hope on May 1
|
Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center and Wildcat Veterans Club invite the community to participate in a Walk for Hope on Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m. It's an opportunity to bring awareness to the national and local issue of suicide and identify local resources and learning opportunities for prevention. Veterans and military personnel experience death by suicide at a rate that is about 1.5 times higher than civilian populations.

Student Art on Display through May 9 in Bristlecone Gallery

It’s one of more popular art exhibitions of the year at Western Nevada College. The 2024 Student Art Show is now showing in Bristlecone Art Gallery on the Carson City campus through May 9. The show features art created by students enrolled in classes from Fall 2023 through Spring 2024. Students’ artwork includes drawings, paints, printmaking, digital media, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture, book art and mixed media.

Eight Performances to Choose from for WNMTC Production of 'Cinderella'
|
The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company will present the new Broadway version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Cinderella” in eight performances at the Carson City Community Center on weekends May 10-19. Winner of three Drama Desk awards and nine Tony nominations, this new Broadway adaptation is lavishly orchestrated and animated with a witty script that brings refreshing depth to the characters of the classic fairy tale.

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is committed to supporting students through the rollout of the new 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). As is often seen with changes and rollouts, there have been challenges with the U.S. Department of Education’s rollout of the 2024-25 FAFSA. In response, NSHE and its institutions have been actively working to support students by implementing expanded outreach, deadline flexibilities, continued monitoring and support, and partnerships with K-12.

SkillsUSA Event Showcases E.L. Cord Automotive Technology Center
|
Western Nevada College’s E.L. Cord Automotive Technology Center was bustling on Wednesday, April 10, with students and judges participating in competitive testing on a variety of skills they’ve learned in auto repair courses and workshops. The SkillsUSA Nevada Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair state finals tested students' knowledge and provided an opportunity for them to learn their strengths and areas needing improvement, and meet other competitors.

Western Nevada College Foundation has released its annual We Are Western Scholarship Appreciation and Recognition Magazine. It's available in the Foundation Office and accessible online on the Foundation webpage. This year's magazine features scholarships and recipients, Willy Wildcat, the record-setting Reach for the Stars Gala, memories of one of the college's longest-serving presidents, how a mother of two was able to pursue her nursing dream, and more.

Western Group of Student Financial Aid Administrators Names Lazzari as VP
|
Western Nevada College Student Services Executive Director JW Lazzari has been elected as vice president of the Western Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, which is a branch of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
Lazzari's vice president role will begin on May 1.
"WASFAA serves an essential role in the western region and provides critical training opportunities, leadership development and advocacy for the financial aid profession. I am thrilled to continue to serve alongside such esteemed colleagues to advance the financial aid profession," Lazzari stated.

Campagni Carson City Toyota Donates Brake Lathe to Auto Mechanics Program

Dick Campagni Carson City Toyota generously donated a brake lathe to Western Nevada College Foundation this spring. This donation will support training for auto mechanics students in operating a brake lathe, an important skill in automotive services. Congratulations: Yazmin Conchas Selected as Student Employee of Year
|
Yazmin Conchas has been selected as Western Nevada College’s 2024 Overall Student Employee of the Year. In previous years, one student worker has been honored during Student Employee Appreciation Week in April. This year, however, multiple students were honored for the different skills that they bring to each department that they serve. Other honorees are Guadalupe De Santiago, Erica Diaz, Jordan Zamora and Hannon Callahan.

Foundation Extends Scholarship Application Deadline to June 1
|
Current and prospective students who haven’t applied for Western Nevada College Foundation scholarships are in luck. The deadline to apply has been extended to June 1. By filling out the application, students will be considered for more than 300 scholarships ranging anywhere from $500 to $5,000.

Western Nevada College's nursing students received a surprise when they learned that Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros S. Anthony was checking in on their emergency simulation event.

Apply for Scholarship to Attend Climate Conference in Washington, D.C.

WNC students, how does a paid educational trip to Washington, D.C., for the national Climate Conference in June sound? Citizens' Climate Lobby's Summit is empowering tomorrow's leaders through this conference on June 8-12. Earn a $1,200 scholarship that the Carson City chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby is providing through WNC Foundation to attend the conference. Apply by April 30.

The reception enabled the student government group the opportunity to present awards to students in a variety of academic areas, including Workforce, Career and Technical Education; Jump Start; Liberal Arts; and Nursing & Allied Health.

Dr. Herring Travels into Path of Solar Eclipse Totality
|
Western Nevada College Professor of Physics Dr. Thomas Herring, who also serves as the director of Jack C. Davis Observatory, made a special effort in order to view the recent solar eclipse in totality. While visiting his cousin in Georgetown, Texas, he also enjoyed and recorded the spectacle of a total solar eclipse on April 8.

WNC's Homeschool Program is an opportunity for high school students interested in aligning their high school curriculum with college courses. Parents and students are welcome!

Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute Tours WCTE Facilities

Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute (CCCLI), now in its 35th year, visited Western Nevada College on April 11. The group toured Western’s Workforce, Career and Technical Education programs, with WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, WCTE Director Travis Carr and various instructors, providing information about the college and our programs. The leadership institute includes WNC’s Academic Advising and Access Director Lauren Stevens and Construction Project Management Instructor Nigel Harrison.

University Police Services presented an alcohol awareness event on April 9 in Dini Student Center as part of Alcohol Awareness Month. Alcohol abuse information and field sobriety tests helped students better understand the impacts of binge drinking and impairment.
