NEWS RELEASE: Nampa Public Library Closed April 2-3

for Adult Nonfiction Collection Reorganization

NAMPA, Idaho – The Nampa Public Library is reimagining nonfiction! Our adult nonfiction collection is undergoing a major reorganization, taking on a brand new, bookstore-style layout. This shift aims to make finding the perfect book easier and more intuitive for everyone.

The library will be closed on April 2-3 to facilitate the reorganization. However, the Holds Pickup Window will remain open for your convenience.

The Nampa Public Library is constantly striving to improve patrons’ library experience. Moving away from the traditional Dewey Decimal System to a subject-based organization, also called the bookstore model, allows patrons to browse by genre or topic, mirroring how people naturally explore information. The new layout groups similar items together under clear sections like "Parenting," "History," or "Cooking," instead of being scattered throughout the Dewey Decimal System.

The benefits of this new layout are numerous, including easier browsing, clear signage, continued search options in the online catalog, and dedicated staff support. Descriptive labels will replace Dewey Decimal numbers, making navigation user-friendly. Additionally, maps of the new layout will be available to help patrons find what they need. Nampa Library staff will be on hand to assist patrons in adjusting to the new system and help them locate their desired materials.

"We recognize that adapting to this new layout might take some getting used to, particularly for those who appreciate and are familiar with the Dewey Decimal System," said Claire Connley, Director of the Nampa Public Library. “However, we believe this adjustment will ultimately make finding the items and resources you need easier and more enjoyable.”

For more details about the reorganization, please visit nampalibrary.org/rnf

Reimagining Nonfiction FAQs

Why are you moving away from the Dewey Decimal System?

Our goal is to improve our patron’s library experience by making books easier to find. This shift aligns with how libraries are changing to better serve their communities. Grouping items by subject instead of numbers allows patrons to more easily find books that meet their needs and interests. This browsing by genre or topic reflects how people naturally explore information and can be especially helpful for those unfamiliar with the Dewey Decimal System.

How is the new system organized?

The new system is organized by subject instead of the Dewey Decimal System. This is called a bookstore model. The bookstore model allows us to group similar items under one section instead of being spread out. For example, parenting books are currently located in the 155s, 306s, and 649s. They will now be located under the “Parenting” category, making it easier for users to see what we have and find something that meets their needs and interests.

I’m used to Dewey. Won’t this be confusing?

We understand completely! It’s natural to feel apprehensive about change, especially when you’re familiar with the Dewey Decimal System. While the switch to a bookstore layout may seem confusing at first, we believe it ultimately offers several benefits that will ease your transition.

What benefits are there with the new bookstore layout?

  • Clear Signage: We’ll have ample directional signage to help you navigate the new layout.
  • Easier Browsing and Faster Discovery: Imagine walking into a bookstore where topics are grouped together. Our new system follows the same logic, making it intuitive to explore related subjects and discover new interests.
  • Clearer Labels: Instead of numbers, you’ll find descriptive labels and sections like “History,” “Craft & Hobby,” or “Cooking.” This makes navigating the library much more user-friendly.
  • Continued Search Options: You can still search by author, title, or keyword in our online catalog, just like before.
  • Staff Support: We’re here to help! Our staff is readily available to answer questions, guide you through the new system, and find exactly what you’re looking for.

Will I still be able to find the books I’m looking for?

  • Absolutely! You can still search by author, title, or keyword in our online catalog, or ask a staff member for assistance.

Are there any resources or maps to help me navigate the new system?

  • Maps of the new layout will be available to help you find what you’re looking for.

Is there a section for new releases?

  • New releases will be located directly behind the 3rd Floor Information Desk.

Who can I ask for help if I’m having trouble finding something?

  • Library staff are available at the Info Desks to answer questions, guide you through the new system, and find exactly what you’re looking for.

What about Youth Nonfiction? Will it also be changed to the bookstore model?

  • Our plan is to start the reorganization process of Youth Nonfiction in Fall 2024.

Ages 6-12

“The course of true love never did run smooth”

In one of William Shakespeare’s most popular works, we follow two couples into the Forest of Athens, where they unknowingly become caught up in the magic and mischief of the Fairies who call it home. While hilarity ensues, a rag-tag group of wannabe actors also use the forest to rehearse their upcoming play for the Duke’s wedding, only making matters worse! Taking place all in one summer night, this timeless tale is filled with magic, love, and a whole lot of laughs along the way!

Recommended for students grades 6-12, but all ages are welcome!

The ladybug has been deemed “a fairy godmother for plants.” In their lifetime of about one year, a single ladybug can eat as many as 5,000 aphids—that’s almost 14 garden pests a day! Sadly, popular agricultural practices have contributed to the rapid decline in ladybug populations. This class is an opportunity to learn what steps to take to protect this vital component of our ecosystem. By taking our pledge, and showing ladybugs and other beneficial insects some love, you can make an impact!

Participants will make and take home a non-toxic weed killer (safe for humans and animals) and free ladybugs.
