NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

We are in the process of recovering as a community in Winnebago County following the recent stabbing violence in Rockford the last week of March.

Winnebago County Board Members, staff, and members of the public engaged in a moment of silence at our recent County Board meeting to remember the five lives tragically taken too soon. We offer our prayers for the victims, their families, the first responders and all in the community who are reeling from the recent traumatic events.

Several others were injured in the incident as well. Neighbors, bystanders, and members of law enforcement at the scene, doing their part to keep themselves and others safe. We pray for those additional victims who were treated for serious injuries. Let us be a comfort to them as they will surely need strength as they recover both mentally and physically from their wounds.

Now more than ever, we are grateful for our fearless first responders with the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, Rockford Police Department and Rockford Fire Department who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. We will continue to prioritize police training at the highest level to ensure our deputies remain well-equipped to respond effectively and swiftly when needed to protect our residents. Thank you also to our Coroner's Office for their hard work and compassion for families during this difficult time, and our leadership at the State's Attorney's Office for their tireless efforts in the prosecution of these cases and seeking justice for families.

It is my hope that we may hold our loved ones a little closer in the weeks ahead as we begin a new season of growing stronger together as a community.

Sincerely,

Joseph V. Chiarelli

Winnebago County Board Chairman

State's Attorney Year in Review

Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley released the State's Attorney's Office 2023 Year in Review to members of the news media last month. Our SAO continues to prioritize the prosecution of our community’s most violent criminals and divert nonviolent offenders from involvement in the criminal justice system. The 2023 Year in Review highlights high conviction rates in murder trials, armed habitual criminal cases, domestic violence cases and child sexual abuse cases. To view the full report, click here.

Severe Weather Preparedness

March was Severe Weather Preparedness Month and a good time to plan. Severe weather preparedness includes gathering information and supplies to prepare for a loss of electricity or evacuating your neighborhood due to a flood. Winnebago County Emergency Management partnered with the National Weather Service (NWS) to host a Storm Spotter class in Cherry Valley last month. More than 100 people were in attendance! Thank you to our Emergency Services & Disaster Agency (ESDA) Coordinator Trent Brass for bringing this valuable resource to Winnebago County to help keep residents safe and better informed for when severe weather strikes.

Advocating for Agriculture

Chairman Chiarelli was honored to present a proclamation to the Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau in honor of “National Agriculture Day” on March 19, 2024. The Winnebago County Board recognizes the significant impact agriculture plays within our county, state, and country. Agriculture is Illinois’ number one industry and employs citizens across this state. From farm fields to urban farms, and to the manufacturing of food and fiber, agriculture is essential to our daily lives. We encourage all to recognize and celebrate the contributions farmers and farm families have made to better the lives of those in our community!

Investing in our Community

To recognize the importance of a community center as an integral part of a thriving neighborhood, Chairman Chiarelli proudly met with Northwest Community Center Executive Director Nichol Fricks for a $1,000 check presentation. This donation will be put toward maintaining the center, as well as continued programming and educational opportunities for area youth. Congratulations and thank you for all you do to maintain and program the NWCC!

Shaping Future Leaders

The Chairman and Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council hosted a workshop for high school students in March where students were encouraged to think about preparing for their futures after graduation. Those in attendance were able to get guidance on career planning, learn about credit and financial literacy, professional ethics and integrity, resume building, mock interviews and more. To learn more about the YLC and how youth can get involved, please visit our website for details.
