Having just experienced our total eclipse of the sun last week, I am reminded of how fascinating our world is. We looked to the far heavens in awe of such an event, while only a few weeks ago we looked to the near heavens in fear as a tornado lashed through the Village.

It was fun to witness the eclipse, but no fun at all to endure the storm, especially if your house was damaged by fallen trees. For both events, we have seen how our POA hourly employees always rise to the occasion. For the eclipse, they provided fun and interesting events for Village residents to attend. After the tornado, they turned out in force to clear downed trees off roads, repair damaged infrastructure, and ensure the safety of residents who were in the tornado’s path. All in a day’s (and night’s) work for these folks.

Your VEBF board has been busy, too. We have initiated a first-ever internal audit, being conducted by two board members who both have audit experience: Bob Zellner and Lloyd Sherman. Bob and Lloyd are both new to the board, so they will approach this assignment with an unbiased view. They will be joined by Diana Podawiltz, a longtime Village resident and not a VEBF board member, who has an extensive background in accounting.

The purpose of the audit is to have this committee examine all our practices, including budgeting and finances, communications, record keeping, and the solicitation, collection, and distribution of donated monies.  We expect a report within a month or so, and will share the results with you.

We also designed and printed new rack cards to replace our 3-year old version that had our old logo on it. This roughly 4”x8” card is one of the primary ways we reach people when they visit us at local trade shows, like the POA Meet & Greet events and the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. We decided to go from a 4-panel bi-fold card to a 2-panel single card. Being half the size, the new card cost half as much to print, while still giving the reader most of the information needed to inform them about the VEBF and our mission. We refer the reader to our website for additional information.

Speaking of the Business Expo, we will be exhibiting there. We hope you will come and visit our booth in the rooms across from the main ballroom at the Coronado Center. It’s coming up on Friday, May 10, from 9AM to 2 PM.  Stop in and say “Hi” to one or two of our board members.

Until next time, remember: Nothing happens in Hot Springs Village until a POA hourly employee comes to work!

Now in his fifth year with the POA, Randy Womack is the Street Maintenance Foreman. He values his appreciation gift from the VEBF in early December as a way to help provide a better Christmas for his family.

Zach Hood has been with the POA for 2 years, and is a Line Maintenance Tech II. Zach says “I really appreciate the generosity of the VEBF.” He uses his annual appreciation gift to “pay some bills and put some money in a savings account.”

Matt Edmonds

Matt Edmonds is the Lead Operator at the POA’s Cedar Creek Sewer Plant, and is a 10-year employee. According to Matt, “I use part of the money to provide Christmas gifts for my family, and also to pay some bills. My family very much appreciates this gift from the VEBF.”

Janice Fordham

Not all POA hourly workers have outside jobs! Janice Fordham works inside as an Administrative Assistant for Public Utilities, and has been with the POA for nearly 3 years. She says, “I use the annual cash donation to buy gifts and groceries for my family. Your donation is very much appreciated!”
