Board of Directors Communication

Michigan Conference UCC

Board of Directors

Rev. Liz Larrivee, M.B.A., M.Div.

President

Our board-staff partnership provides structure for leading the ministry of the Michigan Conference UCC. The BOD’s function of governance and the staff’s function of management complement and support each other. On March 22 and 23, BOD and staff kicked-off a joint Strategic Planning Initiative by attending a retreat facilitated by Quanita Roberson of Nzuzu Consulting  https://www.nzuzu.com/consulting. Retreat goals included (1.) Building relationships and trust, (2.) Deep listening for the movement of the Holy Spirit, (3.) Discovering “Who We Are,” (4.) Discerning “What We Need to Do,” and (5.) Co-creating a draft mission statement for the Conference. We will continue to build on the foundation we began during the retreat as we engage the next steps in our strategic planning process.

In addition to crafting a Conference strategic plan that includes mission, vision, and values statements to guide our work together, a key BOD governance responsibility is to strengthen Conference ministry programs by ensuring adequate financial resources. After careful and detailed analysis--including dialogue with staff—the BOD made two significant financial decisions in alignment with our strategic plan. First, we have reduced our Conference OCWM pass-through giving to the UCC National Ministries from 30% to 10% to be on par with the contribution rates of other UCC Conferences. Second, we have listed the East Lansing Conference property (office, house, and land) for sale with Lisa Kost, Director Coldwell Banker Commercial. Staffing shifts to remote work locations, a frequently empty building, an aging facility with significant deferred maintenance, and increasing operational costs combined to make this a wise fiduciary decision. These board-staff partnership actions demonstrate our ongoing commitment to supporting the transformational ministry of equipping, empowering, encouraging, and connecting Michigan churches and clergy to serve God and neighbor.

Exciting Opportunities to Serve on the Board of Directors

The Michigan Conference Board of Directors (BOD) is seeking to fill two open positions. There is one open position for At Large representation on the Board of Directors. An At Large rep must hold local UCC church membership in the Michigan Conference. This position is currently open, nominations are being accepted until April 30, 2024 and the name of the person chosen by the Nominating Committee will be voted on by the Board on May 18 at their next regularly scheduled meeting.

There is also an opening for a Liaison role that requires holding local church membership in the Eastern Association. It is important to note that the Eastern Association Liaison candidate chosen by the Nominating Committee will be presented for a vote at the Fall Annual Meeting to join the Board of Directors on January 1, 2025.

The BOD is committed to inclusion and charged with a balance of representation across a diverse intersection of demographics. Clergy and lay people are encouraged to be nominated. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please complete the Board of Directors Nominating Committee Biographical Form. Form submissions will be received by Chair of the Nominating Committee, BOD Vice President, Stephen Johnson. Each submission will be reviewed by the Nominating Committee, who will then select a candidate to be voted on for each position.

Thank you for your generous consideration of ministry service to the wider church in a BOD leadership position! We’d love to have you as part of the team!

Church of the Good Shepherd votes on Gaza Ceasefire Statement

After being asked personally by a Muslim friend and neighbor "Would you call for a Cease-fire?" Pastor Deborah Dean-Ware reflected and then took the request to her Church Council at Church of the Good Shepherd (COGS) UCC in Ann Arbor. In January, the Church Council formed a multiracial, multi generational Just Peace committee tasked with 1) drafting a statement for a congregational vote, and 2) providing educational pieces for the congregation.

Rev. Dr. Dean-Ware shared that while imperfect, this was a meaningful process, and one of the hardest conversations they’ve had to deal with in her ministry at COGS. Deb shared that the work they have done over the last 8 weeks as a congregation has changed all of their perspectives. She is appreciative of the sincere growth in most people, especially generationally, and revealed that young people in their midst have clarity about this issue and the church found it valuable to follow their lead.

The Just Peace Committee for this vote curated 6 educational newsletters for the congregation that you can view HERE. The congregation also engaged in several opportunities to view the documentary Israelism.

In alignment with their bylaws, two weeks after sharing a revised statement for congregational review, on March 24, 2024, COGS voted to approve A Statement on the Humanitarian Crisis in Palestine.

Their media advisory shares "The Church of the Good Shepherd urges communities of faith across the globe to join in its demand for justice, peace, and sustainable solutions in Gaza. Only through collective action can we hope to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and work towards a future of peace and dignity for all. If your congregation or community group would like to learn more about the statement drafting process or how COGS is taking collective action through communications campaigns, boycotts, media literacy training, and community education, please contact Rev. Dr. Deborah Dean-Ware."

Edgewood Justice and Peace Team to initiate a project to become an "Apartheid-Free" congregation

Dave Wiley, chair of the Justice and Peace Team at Edgewood United Church in East Lansing has shared an invitation.

Started by the American Friends Service Committee, an interdenominational coalition of faith groups in North America have come together for the Apartheid-Free campaign, and as of March 30, 2024, a total of 281 faith based communities, solidarity organizations, and businesses have signed on.

Organizations are asked to consider the following:

We Affirm: OUR COMMITMENT TO FREEDOM, JUSTICE, AND EQUALITY FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE AND ALL PEOPLE;

We Oppose: ALL FORMS OF RACISM, BIGOTRY, DISCRIMINATION, AND OPPRESSION;

We Declare: OURSELVES AN APARTHEID-FREE COMMUNITY AND TO THAT END,

We Pledge: TO JOIN OTHERS IN WORKING TO END ALL SUPPORT TO ISRAEL’S APARTHEID REGIME, SETTLER COLONIALISM, AND MILITARY OCCUPATION.

Apartheid Free FAQs

The UCC is a founding member of the campaign in 2022 and has signed onto the pledge. The pledge is consistent with the UCC General Synod resolution from 2021 and broader policies.

Olivet Students serve at Back Bay Mission

The University of Olivet recently sent a group of nine students and faculty to Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi March 9 - 15. This was the 25th Anniversary of the school's Alternative Spring Break program which began with week-long trips to the Heifer Project Ranch in Arkansas and evolved to disaster relief work following Hurricane Katrina. Olivet had eight Katrina trips to New Orleans with most serving through the UCC efforts there. Today, most Spring Break trips involve roof repair and home renovation for low income families and the elderly. This year students helped reinforce the major support beams under the home of an elderly women whose home had been devastated by termites. They also built a new deck, replacing one that had rotted. This trip was made possible by a grant from Office of Volunteer Engagement at H.O.P.E. with the National United Church of Christ. This is the third trip Olivet has made to Back Bay Mission.
