Protect the Environment and Your Loved Ones

Springtime, and spring cleaning, is here! Removing unused, expired, or unnecessary medications from your home and safely disposing of them at a year-round site or a Take Back event is the best way to prevent misuse and overdose deaths and protect the health of our environment. So don’t flush or trash medications, bring them to a National Drug Take Back Day event happening Saturday, April 27 from 10 am – 2 pm at locations in Anacortes, La Conner, Mount Vernon, or Sedro-Woolley.

All prescription medications are accepted – no questions asked.

View the list of accepted and non-accepted items.

Shop For a Cause!

Earth Day Celebration in Concrete

This is also an opportunity to pick up some Farm to School-grown flower and vegetable seedlings for your own garden!

Mother’s Day Plant Fair

Join us at the Master Gardener Plant fair on May 11 at the Skagit County Fairgrounds from 8 am - 2 pm. This is THE place to get quality, locally grown plants for your garden, including starts from the Concrete Farm to School greenhouse! We’ll also have information about Basic Food, local farm vegetable shares, and our other programs available.

FVRx Vegetable Thai Curry

At the end of March, our Skagit Fruit and Vegetable Prescription (FVRx) program participants sampled Vegetable Thai Curry while picking up their quarterly resources, and it was a hit! This recipe is quick and versatile, making it a good weeknight option for using any vegetables you have on hand. A couple of pro tips to keep the cost low- purchase curry paste in bulk from The US Chef Store or on Amazon and look for coconut milk in the baking section of the grocery store (near the condensed milk). Happy eating!

FVRx participants watched a cooking demonstration, sampled the dish, and took the recipe home to prepare for their households!

Free Weekly Play & Grow Groups

We are launching a new Play & Grow group on the hospital campus in the newly remodeled Heartwood House! Parents and caregivers of babies can drop in any Thursday at 11 am to connect with other parents and share the joys and challenges of parenting.

This group will include songs, playtime with babies, and discussions with Help Me Grow nurses and our Perinatal Support Resiliency Specialist. Play & Grow is free, and no registration is required! Groups begin Thursday, May 2, and will occur every week. Click on the flyer to download.

Results Are In – Parent Survey

To better serve our community, our Thriving Children & Families pillar and Help Me Grow Skagit surveyed local parents and caregivers about what types of classes and groups they want to see offered. Of the 65 respondents, a vast majority preferred play groups over structured classes. About half want in-person gatherings, while 61% would like hybrid options. Facebook groups are the primary source of information for 89% of the respondents.

As our team reflects on these important insights, we’ll continue to collaborate with community partners to develop and deliver programs that ensure that every parent and caregiver feels supported and equipped on their parenting journey.

WIC Celebrates Nutrition Month

Esthela and Jonathan stopped by to say hello to Amy M. at the Sedro-Woolley WIC office last month. All District 304 WIC families were invited to see the office space and meet WIC staff. Families picked out a Nutrition Month sticker and took home the newest WIC Recipe Book that highlights kid-friendly options. Kids got to choose from a lunch bag or MyPlate plate to take home to try out the yummy recipes.

Like Esthela, many parents want to know how they can involve their preschooler in mealtime preparation. Jonathan and his family can look through the colorful pictures in the cookbook and make Fiesta Breakfast Quesadilla together. This cookbook is filled with ways to involve kids in the kitchen.

If you haven't already done so, please complete our quick 5-minute survey to help us understand how to best serve our community! Participate and be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card. Your voice matters!
