April Book Pick:

The End of Drum-Time by Hanna Pylvainen

$28.99

Day group: Wed, 4/10 at 1:00 PM

(This time slot is full.)

Evening group: Tues, 4/16 at 6:30 PM

"In prose that is both luxuriant and precise, Hanna Pylväinen vividly transports the reader to the remote Scandinavian tundra of the 1850s, introducing complicated characters who reveal their deepest joys, sorrows, fears, and hopes. This stunning novel manages to explore major themes of identity, race, politics, and faith, all while putting the focus firmly on the human stories at hand. The End of Drum-Time masterfully takes us to a place, people, and time unfamiliar to most readers but one that becomes completely alive--and closely mirrors the most divisive and potent aspects of our contemporary lives."

Mystery

"An absolutely engrossing tale...written with the abundance of whimsy and dark humor that seems to permeate nearly everything that Horowitz creates. Kudos to anyone who can figure this one out!" -- Booklist (starred review)

"What begins as a decorous whodunit set in a gated community on the River Thames turns out to be another metafictional romp for mystery writer Anthony Horowitz and his frequent collaborator, ex-DI Daniel Hawthorne. . . .Gloriously artificial, improbable, and ingenious. Fans . . . will rejoice." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Clear is a compact, taut and brilliant novel with an ingenious premise: one man is sent to evict another from his land, but suddenly requires the second man's aid. Everything gets more complicated from there. The book is about belonging, a dying language, secrets, and a pistol in a box. I loved every page."

"I love this book! Eileen Garvin has created characters--human and corvid--so vividly appealing that long before I finished the book, I felt we were good friends. This is a book about both loss and redemption, a song of praise to the dazzling beauty and power of connecting with creatures other than ourselves. It will make you want to cheer!" --Sy Montgomery, New York Times bestselling author of The Soul of an Octopus

"Hugo and Nebula Award winner Leckie collects 18 stories for a stunning showcase of her talents. Leckie plays with tone... but in every borrowed style (and in the style that is deeply her own), the detailed worlds, intelligent plotting, and clear-eyed compassion make these stories standout. ... Leckie's fans will treasure this."-- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"Bestseller Henry takes on fake-dating in this equally poignant and charming tale of love after loss... Henry perfectly balances sorrow and discord with love and humor, and romance fans will appreciate watching the growth of the characters' relationships and of Daphne as a person. "Freya Sampson never fails to make me cry in the best possible way, and Nosy Neighbors is no exception. While the characters try to solve a mystery in their quest to save their beloved home, it becomes apparent that the real mystery is how they ended up in that situation in the first place--a mystery Sampson slowly unravels with the utmost care for their humanity and abundant charm. It's impossible not to root for Dorothy, Kat, and even Shelley House itself."-- Tori Anne Martin, USA Today bestselling author of This Spells Disaster
