ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Anthony "Tony" Grego

Class of 2002

Tony and his wife live in Cleveland, but he remains a Steeler fan. He is a third generation graduate of North Catholic following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Fritz ('53), his mom, Kim ('79) and his aunt Gina, ('84).

Bring us up to date on your life since graduation

"After graduation, I moved to Cleveland to attend John Carroll University and basically stayed here since. I began my career in accounting with Ernst & Young, spending over five years in their audit practice. Then I spent nearly 10 years with a large, global manufacturing company headquartered in Cleveland, where I ran corporate accounting and financial reporting. Fast forward to 2022 and I took my current job as Director of SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting with Mister Car Wash, the largest car wash operator in the country.

In June 2022, I proposed to my wife, Lacey, and we were married on December 17, 2022, in Cleveland. Fellow NC ’02 classmate Fr. Mike Ackerman married us!

We reside in Westlake, OH with our two furry friends, Kevin (dog) and Maple (cat). I remain active golfing, traveling, volunteering, and spending time with friends and family."

Who were your favorite teachers/coaches and classes?

"I had several, Mr Militello, Mr Quinn, Mr Lyons, Mr Evans, and my golf coach, Mr Johnston." Tony's favorite classes were history with Mr Lyons, Accounting with Mr Stanczak, Current Events with Mr "K" and Spanish with Mr Militello.

Favorite Memories of NC

"There are too many… golf matches (especially our annual road trip to Erie) and spending time with guys on the golf team. The morning TV announcements were always funny. Homeroom with Mr. O was usually a good time, as were pep rallies and cheering on the sports teams from the student section. Knowing that I walked to same halls as my grandfather 50 years after he did was a pretty cool daily reminder while there."

What did North mean to you?

"It means a lot to have attended a Catholic High School in the city, where my grandfather graduated 50 years prior to me. It wasn’t a fancy place with the best facilities, but it was A LOT of fun and I think we received a great education by dedicated teachers and administrators. I am very proud to have attended NC and will remember it always."

Where did you and your friends hang out?

"Ronnie Dunn, Andrew Luciana, Phil Lamperski along with several others. You could find us out in the North Hills somewhere with a nightcap dessert at Eat N Park!"

Part Time Job?

"Caddying at Fox Chapel Golf Club in the summers and working at K Mart during the winter."

MARIANIST WOMEN'S MINISTRY- Prayer Committee
The Marianist Women's Ministry would like to offer alumni and the entire North Catholic community a chance to pray for you and your intentions. The MWM gathers weekly to pray the rosary every Wednesday at 2pm. During seasonal weather, they gather outside in the grotto. When the weather turns, they pray in the Chapel. All are welcome.

Please click this link if you have a prayer request. While they would love to have a first name for each prayer request to make the prayers more personal, it's completely understood if you wish to keep them anonymous.

Flashback Photo

Last Month's Flashback

This is a picture from the 1994 yearbook. And while it may look like students in a computer lab, these are actually seniors getting ready to have a pizza eating contest during spirit week. A few people responded. Ryan Scarola ('94), Ray Sefscik ('95) were early respondents. Jim Seelman ('94) identified everyone and what was going on, "Well, being that I’m in it, this one was easy.

That is Pete Kostoric, Myself, Chris Wagner, and just slightly visible in the back is Lee Sweeney. That was the pizza eating contest during spirit week. " Jen and Brian Gauntner ('95) were also able to identify the pizza pie contestants. We have no idea who the winner was.

Class of 1986

Interesting report from Greg Zeis on former NC teacher George Sprys.

Since my retirement in July of 2021, I’ve volunteered to do a Negro Leagues Baseball project for Retrosheet.org and a few different projects for SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). The current project I’m working on for SABR is transcribing the Bill Weiss Baseball Player Questionnaires, a collection of self-completed surveys of professional baseball players from 1945-2005. Much to my surprise (pun sort of intended), I came across a Questionnaire completed by Mr. Sprys which I have enclosed.

It's full of several fun facts. His most unusual experience in the Service during WWII was hitting a single off of 3-time All Star, Tex Hughson, while nursing a hangover! He also hit three consecutive homers for Appleton, WI before entering the Service in 1942. They appear to be the only three homeruns he hit that year.

When Mr. Sprys found out that Glen Campbell and I were on the baseball team, he was very kind to us. He gave us the keys to the batting cage and told us to go hit instead of either having Study Hall or attending his class… we don’t remember which one exactly.  At that time North had a very, very rudimentary batting cage under the gym. You had to duck down just to get into the dusty room and again to get into the batting cage. Left-handed batters couldn’t take a full swing without hitting some makeshift fencing and the pitching machine itself would drop about every fourth or fifth ball instead of “pitching” it to the batter. And the on/off switch for the pitching machine didn’t work which meant you had two options, you had to creep along to another spot in the “cage” to pull the plug on the machine so that you collect the balls that had dropped underneath it or you could try to time the pitching arm and collect a ball or two while the arm was slowly starting its windup again.

Well, needless to say, Glen mistimed the pitching arm and as the arm came around again, it put a 2 or 3 -inch slice into his arm near his elbow. When we returned the keys to Mr. Sprys, Glen never let on that his arm was hurt/bleeding as he correctly figured we’d never get to go to the cage unsupervised again if Mr. Sprys knew about the incident.

We also remember Mr. Sprys helping out at a baseball practice over at Gardner Field. He was trying to hit one-handed flyballs to get the outfielders some practice, but instead was depositing the balls over the fence. He was probably 62 or so at the time and he couldn’t keep the ball in the park.

Scholarship News

Military Legacy Scholarship

North Catholic has a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation’s military forces. The goal is to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship annually. To date, over $30,000 has been raised to fund this annual scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to the student provided certain benchmarks are met. Every 4 years (or sooner) it is awarded to an incoming 9th grade student. Molly Burke ('24) is the recipient of the scholarship.

If you wish, you may make a contribution in someone's honor/memory. Donations can be made by sending checks payable to North Catholic, write "North Catholic Military Scholarship" in the memo, and mail to:

Class of 1959 Scholarship

The NCHS Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund has awarded $5,200 Scholarships for the 2023-24 School Year to Mary Narvett and Mary Taggart-Snyder.

The Fund has awarded scholarships totaling $103,600 to twelve recipients since the inception of the Fund. Contributions to the Fund can be made at any time and should be sent to the North Catholic Foundation, North Catholic High School, ATTN: Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.

If you would like more information about the Fund, please contact Joe Blitzko(joeyblitz@aol.com), Dick Halleran (rhalleran@verizon.net), or Mike Conroy (conroy1603@gmail.com).

Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship

The Legacy Scholarship was set up as part of our 50th class reunion by Dan Wolovich and Wayne Young and has been under the direction of Bob Colbert and Walt Quinn for the past few years. The fund now stands at about $60,000 and growing.

The scholarship has helped students with the ever increasing cost of Catholic education. When we were at North, almost all of the tuition was paid by our parishes (remember having to face your pastor as he reviewed your report card?) Now the cost of tuition has fallen completely on the parents.

In order to help parents provide the great education that we received all those years ago, we need more of our classmates to step up and help keep our legacy scholarship fund growing. No contribution is too small. Thanks to classmates, ED KOSS, TIM MCMAHON, JOE MCKELVEY, and JOCKO ILCISIN for their recent contributions. Also a donation was made in honor of classmate BILL GUBANIC. Joe and Jocko and many others continue to make contributions periodically through out the year. Other classmates have continued to make small monthly contributions by setting up a monthly credit card donation (read $10 to $25). The great thing about that is it's painless and adds to the scholarship fund which continues to grow. As of the beginning of September there is $48,000 in our endowment.

We are happy to announce that this year's Legacy Scholarships for this school year have been awarded to sophomore MADISON SERETTI. The first semester honor roll was recently posted. Madison is an honors roll student with a GPA of 3.9 and is the daughter of NC alum, Leslie Filip ('89). Junior DONNIE SCHUBERT is a basketball player and made the high honor roll with a 3.9 GPA.

Walt Quinn and Bob Colbert meet with NC Class of '65 scholarship recipient Donnie Schubert ('25).

Walt Quinn and Bob Colbert meet with NC Class of '65 scholarship recipient Madison Seretti ('26).

Consider making a donation to the fund today!

You can send your check to the school with a notation that it's for the '65 scholarship fund; or If you would like to contribute a small monthly amount via your credit card, contact Amber Nicotra Morrison to set it up.

How fortunate we were to have had the benefit of the education afforded us. What a wonderful opportunity this provides to all of us and the remaining families to "invest" in a "guaranteed return on that investment" by providing a similar opportunity to current students' futures.

Planned Giving

Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here or contact Amber Nicotra Morrison in the Development Office at amorrison@northcatholic.org.
