Prom Season
While we are in the middle of winter, we have been looking to Spring and the Senior Prom. For the May alumni newsletter, we want to show the class of 2023 how prom was years ago. So, we want you to send us a picture of you and your prom date. Please send those photos to us here. We need to have prom photos by April 26th in order to have them in the May alumni newsletter. Get out those old photo albums, climb up in the attic, search the garage, and come up with your best prom picture. Also let's us know the prom theme (if you can remember it).

Mike graduated from Wheeling Jesuit College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. A Teaching Internship at the University of Pittsburgh from Summer 1974 to Fall 1975 led to a Master of Education Degree in Secondary Science Education and Curriculum Development with Teaching Semester. From 1975 to Summer 1977, Mike worked full time at the Highlands District. In 1977, Mike was accepted to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He graduated in 1981 with a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree. He joined the US Army in 1981 and participated in the First Gulf War in 1992-1993 from Egypt (In Theater). Favorite Memories of NC
"The memories of my friends. The 9-mile bus ride to school from Perry Highway. Singing in the chorus. Driving to school senior year. And having a girlfriend to take to the chorus dinner dance and prom."
Favorite classes, teachers
"Bro. Windish, German, had that sheepish grin and that look Bruce Willis has when telling you something obvious. Mr. Hmel, English, reminded me of the Penguin from Batman with his mannerisms and he was so demanding. Bro. Csarny, Physics, graded on a curve so you could not tell if you were passing or not. Bro. Deanhoffer, Biology, was very scientific and cut and dry with his multiple-choice unit tests. Mr. Egan, History, was a model teacher and coach to be feared. And Bro. Salerno was the chorus director where I spent 3 years in the chorus. His patience and direction were the best. I enjoyed our concerts. "
Who were your friends and where did you hang out
"I walked to the school bus and home again with Joe Brosky every day. Kevin Maloney and I went swimming at the “Y," played tennis and worked at the local library together. Kevin and I cut down my mother’s 7.5 ft blue spruce tree at her request and drove it 5 miles to the library at Christmas time with it on top of his open red LeMans convertible and we decorated it at the library. Larry Gorwick became a longtime friend since elementary school and was there 43 years later to help at my mother funeral and help sell my house."
What did North Mean to you?
"It meant a place of higher learning in a safe environment. It was the means to further ends. It was a place to start growing up. The place to learn to study and prepare for the future. It was the best choice."
Memories of Graduation Day?
"It was a rocky time due to the Vietnam War. My draft number and future were being determined by government lottery that summer. There was some controversy, and the Class Valedictorian speaker was substituted and there was some pushing and shoving after the ceremony in the parking lot."
Mike at his 2015 retirement

Flashback Photo
Last Month's Flashback
This is a picture from the 1986 Yearbook. During Homecoming Week, there was a day called Nerd Day. According to the yearbook, "there was a special day reserved especially for these people. Each person has his own idea of the ideal nerd." Obviously, students took the opportunity to dress in the fashion of their definition of the word. Pictured (l-r): seniors John Maloy, Mark Lancia, Greg Paulson, Michele Pullen, Sharon Tebeau, and Tammy Spade. As the yearbook adds, "showing off the new trends in nerd style."
| |
|
A few people commented on the photo. Megan Waskiewicz ('86) said, "John Malloy, Mark Lancia, Greg Paulson, Michelle Pullen...I can not recall the names of the last two on the right. I think Nerd Day was a part of spirit week." Ken Walker ('86) identified his fellow classmates, and while Mary Ladesic didn't identify anyone she knew it was nerd day.

Military Legacy Scholarship
North Catholic has a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation’s military forces. The goal is to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship annually. To date, over $30,000 has been raised to fund this annual scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to the student provided certain benchmarks are met. Every 4 years (or sooner) it is awarded to an incoming 9th grade student. Molly Burke ('24) is the recipient of the scholarship.
If you wish, you may make a contribution in someone's honor/memory. Donations can be made by sending checks payable to North Catholic, write "North Catholic Military Scholarship" in the memo, and mail to:
North Catholic High School
1617 Route 228
Cranberry Township, PA 16066
ATTN: Development Office
A kiosk with the names of all alumni who have served in the military stands in the main hallway of the school. Thank you for your service.
The John Latulippe Memorial Scholarship
The John Latuilippe Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Gabriel Grindstaff - NC class of 2024. Thank you to all who have donated.
Class of 1959 Scholarship
The NCHS Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund has awarded $5,200 Scholarships for the 2022-23 School Year to Brianna Venturella and Shamus Straub.
The Fund has awarded scholarships totaling $93,200 to ten recipients since the inception of the Fund. Contributions to the Fund can be made at any time and should be sent to the North Catholic Foundation, North Catholic High School, ATTN: Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.
If you would like more information about the Fund, please contact Joe Blitzko(joeyblitz@aol.com), Dick Halleran (rhalleran@verizon.net), or Mike Conroy (conroy1603@gmail.com).
Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship
The Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship award for the 2022-2023 school year was made to senior Kaitlyn Kenaan. She is the daughter of NC alum Dan Kenaan ('91). Kaitlyn received $1,000 to help with tuition. She is an honor roll student. Thomas Zizan, the son of Julie (Rogalla) Zizan ('87) graduated last June. We will award two scholarships for the 2023-2024 school year next summer.
While the Legacy Scholarship continues to grow, we do need the help of our classmates to increase the scholarship fund. When we were at North, almost all of the tuition was paid by our parishes, now the burden has fallen on the parents. Catholic education is not cheap and in order to help parents provide the great education we received all those years ago, we need more of our classmates to step up and help keep our legacy scholarship fund growing. No contribution is too small. Thanks to classmate, JOE MCKELVEY for his recent contribution. If you have questions, feel free to contact Bob Colbert (bobcolbert@comcast.net) or Walt Quinn (quinn.walter@comcast.net)
Some of our classmates are committing to making a small (read $10, $15) monthly donation via their credit card. It's a painless way to contribute and Bob Colbert and others have been doing so for a while. As Bob said, "it's less that the cost of a bottle of wine." If you would like to contribute a small monthly amount via your credit card, contact Amber Nicotra Morrison to set it up.
John Mikulan is also donating 20% of the royalties from his book, The Bark of the Day to the fund.
Class of 1966 Scholarship
The Class of ’66, is proud to announce the selection of their first scholarship recipient, Andrew Scears ('26). The committee, under the leadership of Tom Balestreire, is well on its way to funding its goal of $100,000 for the Class of ’66 Scholarship Fund. The Fund will be administered by the Class in conjunction with the school. We, Tom Maier, Jim Beran, Hank Marziale, Paul Ladish, and Bob Gierl have contacted many but if you or someone you know is wishing to be included, contact Tommy, 404.358.4864, text or call.

Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship
Special thanks to all who donated to the Kathy Hickey Monti (’75) scholarship. More than $20,000 has been raised to help provide financial support for a young woman who possesses the same leadership qualities that Kathy demonstrated in her life. A member of the first co-ed class at North, Kathy was a leader among her peers, becoming the first captain of North's first women's basketball team. Later she was named Assistant Basketball Coach, who along with Coach Don Barth (’51), led the Trojanettes to win multiple state championships. In 2017, just before her death, Kathy was voted unanimously into the North Catholic Hall of Fame. Kathy will long be remembered for her impact on hundreds of lives as a teacher, an assistant basketball coach and female role model for girls. If you'd like to donate, please click here or checks can be sent payable to North Catholic with "Kathy Monti Scholarship Fund" in the Memo and mailed to North Catholic High School, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.

NC Class of 1953 Scholarship
Thank you to all who have contributed to the North Catholic Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund (“the Fund”). More than $28,000.00 has been raised. Senior Brock Varley received a one-time award of $1,000. The Fund was proposed by Reg Urschler in the Spring of 2021, and an ad hoc committee was established, comprised of Reg, Charley Goetz, Bob Muth, and Vince Brogan. Excellent letters were prepared, describing the Fund, and soliciting donations which include outright gifts, donations in honor of living and deceased classmates, as well as donations suggested in obituaries in lieu of flowers. The amounts of individual donations have ranged from under $100 to over $11,700. Most gifts are in the $100 to $500 range.
The ad hoc committee urges all classmates to make new or continuing contributions to the Fund. Checks should be made payable to the “NC Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund”and sent to the attention of: Amber Morrison, North Catholic High School, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, Pa 16066.
How fortunate we were to have had the benefit of the education afforded us. What a wonderful opportunity this provides to all of us and the remaining families to "invest" in a "guaranteed return on that investment" by providing a similar opportunity to current students' futures.

Of course, the seniors will ring the bell during a school assembly recognizing North's WPIAL Champions.
Coach Rottman has won 11 WPIAL titles and has one assistant coach by her side for each of them. Here's that story.

Planned Giving
Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here or contact Amber Nicotra Morrison in the Development Office at amorrison@northcatholic.org.

Online giving to North Catholic is fast, secure and easy!
Because tuition alone does not fully cover the cost of educating our students, we are grateful for every gift made to the Annual Fund, Capital Campaign, Scholarships and various fundraisers. Every gift benefits our students and stays at North Catholic.
Please accept our deepest gratitude on behalf of the young men and women who will benefit most from your generosity.
EVERY gift stays at North Catholic.
