A Message from VP of Academics and Ed Tech

Dear Carondelet Community,

Spring is here and the flowers are starting to show their pretty colors… Days are getting a little longer and the weather is generally sunnier… This means we are getting closer to the end of the year. The end of the year means year-end MAP tests and a countdown to the AP Exams for our AP students. It is also a countdown for our seniors as they start thinking about their next steps and exciting new adventures. In fact, celebrations start this week! Senior student-athletes that will be playing their sport in college will be recognized at the National Letter of Intent (NLI) ceremony on Wednesday.

The end of the year also means we are turning and planning for the future. This year we experienced one of our largest applicant pools yet, and we can’t wait to welcome our new freshman families to the Carondelet community. The class of 2028 will be coming onto campus for events and placement tests in the weeks to come—make sure to say hi if you see some new faces! Behind the scenes, I am working with De La Salle as we partner to build student schedules for next year, which believe it or not, is a several-month process with many connecting parts that make up the intricate puzzle.

This is a wonderful moment to take a breath and embrace all of it: The beauty around us, the challenges, and the celebrations that drive us forward. Hopefully, we see many of you at CHS/DLS shared Company production of Anything Goes, which starts on Thursday.

Blessings,

Elizabeth Chaponot, Ph.D.

Vice Principal of Academics and Ed Tech

Guest Speaker Leta McCollough Seletzky

Guest Speaker Leta McCollough Seletzky

On Friday, April 19 during X-Block, our juniors will have the privilege of engaging with a guest speaker. Leta McCollough Seletzky, author of the 2023 work, The Kneeling Man: My Father's Life as a Black Spy Who Witnessed the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. will be on campus to talk to our juniors about her book and her experience writing it. This is part of the US History curriculum that juniors all take and a wonderful way to hear about real world connection to the civil rights movement.

Reminders

2024-25 Parking Permit Update

Parking permit requests will go live on our website on Monday, April 15. The forms are set up to accept responses from Carondelet students only. Please connect with your daughter to ensure that she fills out the proper form.  Permits are not given on a first-come, first-serve basis, and all applications submitted before the deadline will be considered. Unfortunately, our parking lot does not accommodate all of our driving students. Priority is given to carpooling seniors, followed by single-rider seniors, carpooling juniors, and single-rider juniors. Students must have a valid driver’s license in order to obtain a permit.

High School Placement Test for 7th Graders

Carondelet is hosting a practice High School Placement Test for 7th-grade girls and boys on Wednesday, May 22, at 4:00 PM. Registration just opened and spots will go fast. Register here.

MAP Testing

MAP testing for freshmen and sophomores continues. These tests have many benefits. They help assess a student’s ACT readiness and help prep for that type of exam. These tests also give us as a school a barometer for whether our teaching is transferring to actual skills connected to literacy and math.

Here is the schedule for MAP this spring:

  • April 18 & 19: Language 6+ (Religious Studies Department)
  • April 23 & 24: Reading 6+ (English Department)

Stepping Up, Giving Back: Mariella C. '24

"I signed up to volunteer one day during a school break on my own. I always have to put trust in myself and God and remember why I decide to be a part of large projects like the one for Habitat for Humanity."

Mariella's passion for construction and desire to make a difference in the world led her to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. For Mariella, it wasn't just a volunteer opportunity but a personal mission. Her belief in the importance of providing homes for those in need inspired her to make a tangible difference in the world of construction. Read more about her story here.

Trap Team

Yesterday, teachers from Carondelet and De La Salle joined the DLS Trap Team for a morning of education and safe trap shooting at the Martinez Gun Club. The team consists of 49 athletes from both schools and ten certified coaches on hand. Together, they guided teachers and staff through the basics and ensured everyone had a great time.

The DLS Trap Team is one of the best teams in the area. They won first place at the Nationals in Las Vegas and at the State Championship for both Varsity and JV. We are thankful for our teachers and staff, who took the time to learn about the sport and bond with the students in a unique way.

Jalina Porter ‘04 shaped history in 2020 as the first woman of color to serve as the Principal Duty Spokesperson at the U.S. Department of State.
