April 12 | 7 PM
University of Pittsburgh, Frick Fine Arts Building
60 years ago, Pittsburgh made history by developing the first successful polio vaccine. On April 12, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Frick Fine Arts Building on the University of Pittsburgh campus, you are invited to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Salk Polio Vaccine with a free screening of the award winning documentary, The Shot Felt 'Round The World. A dessert reception will follow sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association. This screening is free, but seats are limited. To RSVP, click here. With vaccines once again in the news due to the outbreak of measles, the polio virus being explored as a cure for cancer, and the Gates Foundation and Rotary International working to finish the job which began in a basement lab on the Pitt campus, this film is a timely reminder of what can happen when a city and a country rolls up its sleeves to defeat a common enemy. A horror movie could not be more dramatic: A disease seeks out and terrorizes mainly children and their parents each summer. They no longer go to pools or movie theaters for fear they might contract the potentially fatal disease that often cripples its victims. A beloved, polio-afflicted U.S. President inspires the country's men, women, and children to send their dimes to fund research - some of which would go to an ambitious, but unknown 33-year-old physician, Dr. Jonas Salk, and his team at the University of Pittsburgh, who would change the course of medical history. Register Now! A reversion of the polio movie, "The Polio Story: The Vaccine That Changed The World" premiered in prime time in March on BBC4 and received triple the audience for its time slot! Read about it here!
