MATIA KITCHEN CHEF AVERY ADAMS

NAMED FINALIST FOR BEST CHEF NORTHWEST AND PACIFIC

BY JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION

Last week, Orcas Island Chef Avery Adams joined several Seattle-area chefs and restaurateurs in the spotlight as nominees for the prestigious James Beard Foundation 2024 Restaurant and Chef Awards.

The James Beard Foundation recognizes culinary excellence across the nation and for any who have experienced the amazing dishes from Chef Adams, the nomination comes as no surprise. Chef Adams had this to say about the honor:

“In a rare occurrence, I feel profoundly wordless in the wake of this tremendous honor. Surely, they must mean someone else? This is a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life; one that I never set out to achieve or thought possible to receive. It must be said that none of what happens at Matia happens without the extraordinary work of our staff, our producers, and our unyielding supportive community. To them, I hold perpetual gratitude. This honor belongs to the San Juan Islands as whole, my family, my friends, my peers, my mentors, and all those who gave me solace, inspiration, kindness, and taught me the real magic of the flavors of our region. I am truly humbled and thankful for such a special recognition and to be included amongst such truly talented nominees.”

APRIL ART IN THE LIBRARY

In April, the Orcas Island Library’s “Art in the Library” series will feature an exhibit of paintings, prints and sculpture by artist Ponch Immel.

Ponch recalls, “At the age of three, while drawing and sculpting sand at the beach in Minnesota I had an epiphany which left me ecstatic. I don’t think that I even knew the word “artist”, but I knew this was what I was meant to do.” Ponch attended art school, but still considers herself largely self-taught, inspired by books and museums around the world. “Creativity is a muscle which must be exercised!”, she says.

Ponch grew up in Minneapolis and after moving with her family to Washington in 1989, settled on Orcas in 2019.
