Arts Education in the Schools Month Celebration | |
In Rhode Island, March is Arts Education in the Schools Month. On March 7, art students and educators spread the importance of arts education. Student art displays were set up on the second floor near and around the entrance to the House and Senate chambers.
Before the legislative session for the day started, selected R.I. students performed in the Senate Lounge in front of friends and family. Welcoming the guests to the event were Rep. Lauren Carson, RISCA's Lynne McCormack and RIDE's Lisa Odom-Vilella. Later Sen. Hanna Gallo met with RIDE and RISCA officials in the Senate chamber.
At the start of the legislative session, resolutions were read simultaneously in the House (HB 8034) by Rep. Carson, and in the Senate (SB 2728) by Sen. Gallo. Additionally, the Governor signed a proclamation declaring March Arts in the Schools Month.
Read the Proclamation.

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) has developed an arts curriculum framework. Available on the RIDE website, the arts curriculum provides guidance for Local Education Agencies and educators on the implementation of National Core Arts Standards, which define the artistic processes and high-quality K-12 arts learning for the state.
Some of what the newly developed curriculum arts framework accomplishes:
- Details information on selecting curriculum resources and designing assessments.
- Encourages real-world applications.
- Avoids the perpetuation of gender, cultural, ethnic, or racial stereotypes.
- Presents specific, pedagogical approaches and strategies to meet the academic and nonacademic needs of multilingual learners.
The framework was developed by an interdisciplinary team via an open and consultative process, which includes feedback from a racially and ethnically diverse group of stakeholders. In addition to RISCA, educators, students, families, the general public, and community partners contributed to the framework.
