“At Tribute” is the titled exhibition by Oakland native and Oakland-based artist, Eric Murphy. The double entendre which means to be present at a tribute (this exhibition), highlights the attributes of people and things that are being commemorated or regarded as influential from Oakland, California.

Celebrating Oakland’s finest both past and present, Murphy continues his series of famous people you may or may not know that are from or affiliated with Oakland in one capacity or another in his “Oakland All-Stars” series. They are engulfed in a map of Oakland, decorated in its district lines as motifs that the artist has been using since 2016. Embedded in each map are images of their story of fame or their connection to Oakland or career background. Its playing cards format includes the City of Oakland logo in place of the normal playing cards suit and pips (hearts, spades, etc.) below the celebrity’s initials with a language translation on the flip side. Each framed piece has a hand-painted black mat by the artist to center the viewer’s eye on the playing card presentation. Various found images are mixed with designs and photographs taken by the artist to complete the final work.

I Love Art. I love Music. I love Hip Hop. It's really that simple. I've had no formal training in regards to the arts, just desire, passion and a willingness to do it. My mother is a painter so I grew up drawing occasionally here and there, but in 2012 I committed to filling the walls of a small studio space with paintings. After painting a wide range of subjects (i.e. animals, portraits, butterflies, abstract, etc.) with acrylic paint being my primary medium of choice, I figured I should merge two things I love most which are music and art. I started with Hip Hop and grew to painting a wider range of individuals who have had a significant impact on my life. My goal is to highlight their beauty and use highly saturated colors to symbolize just how colorful our world is.

The Art of Living Black/The Art of the African Diaspora. Now in its 27th year, Art of the African Diaspora (AOTAD) continues to express and celebrate the creative achievements of artists of African descent. This year, over 150 artists showcase their work at Richmond Art Center, as well as in open studios and satellite exhibitions at different venues around the Bay Area.

CURATOR’S STATEMENT

“What is an Asian American woman artist?”

Karin Higa’s influential essay from 2002 recounts the historical exclusion of Asian American women from the male-dominated Asian American movement and the second wave feminists of the 1960s and 1970s by tracing the art and lives of the following Asian American women artists: Ruth Asawa, Hisako Hibi, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Rea Tajiri, and Hung Liu. The author recognizes the specificities of the artists’ personal and collective histories, generational differences, and artistic practices, and she concludes, “What is the wisdom in grouping the diverse and divergent practices of these artists?”

The Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) was founded in 1989 by the artists Flo Oy Wong and Betty Kano with the ardent support of art historian Moira Roth as an ecology of support for Asian American women that provided the space for experimentation and the reimagining of “a place of one’s own.” Through the production of exhibitions, slide presentations, symposia, and publications, AAWAA has sought to address Asian American women artists’ historical absence within mainstream art institutions and their misrepresentation within the historical record. Over the past thirty-five years, the association has fostered the creative practices of hundreds of artists and writers in the Bay Area including Lucy Arai, Ruth Asawa, Bernice Bing, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Lenore Chinn, Terry Acebo Davis, Shari Arai DeBoer, Hisako Hibi, Nancy Hom, Betty Kano, Genny Lim, Hung Liu, Barbara Jane Reyes, Pallavi Sharma, Cynthia Tom, Flo Oy Wong, and Nellie Wong.
