April is National Defeat Diabetes Month. For those with Type 2 Diabetes, the most common type, the body does not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas makes extra insulin to compensate. But over time the pancreas cannot make enough to keep blood glucose levels normal.
Type 2 Diabetes is treated with lifestyle changes, oral medications (pills), and insulin.
When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:
- Right away, your cells may be starved for energy.
- Over time, high blood glucose levels can damage eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.
The CWRU Wellness Program offers assistance to those who are diabetic or struggling with pre-diabetes:
- FREE Nutrition Counseling with EASE@work
- Upcoming on-site course "Nutrition Action" (look for registration information on the website in mid April)
- Online classes with the LivingWell Program from Selfhelpworks
- Additional Weight Management programs like Weight Watchers and the Designing Your Personal Weight Loss Plan MOOC
