Dark Sky Community
Anthem is a Dark Sky Community

What is a dark sky community?
A dark sky community is a town, city, municipality or other legally organized community that has shown exceptional dedication to the preservation of the night sky.

How harmful is light pollution?
People may not think that light can be a pollutant, but inappropriate or excessive use of light can have serious consequences for humans, wildlife, and the environment. Too much artificial light at night can disrupt a person’s biological clock and prevents our bodies from releasing melatonin, which induces sleep.

You Can Help!
The good news is that light pollution, unlike many other forms of pollution, is reversible and each one of us can make a difference! Just being aware that light pollution is a problem is not enough; the need is for action. You can start by minimizing the light from your own home at night. You can do this by following these simple steps.
  • Only use lighting when and where it’s needed
  • If safety is a concern, install motion detector lights and timers
  • Properly shield all outdoor lights
  • Keep your blinds drawn to keep light inside
  • Learn more about Outdoor Lighting Basics
