This is all thanks to the support of our sponsors, over 30 local small businesses and independent merchants, local city and state officials, committed corporate donors, and the hundreds of supporters who participated in and shared the fundraiser!

There are some tickets left for the LAST La Cocina de Loisaida class of 2023!
On Saturday, December 9th, we're going to have a sweet night! Come learn how to make traditional Puerto Rican desserts. Your family and friends will be so impressed when they taste the delicious desserts you serve with your holiday meal.
The class will be approximately 1.5 hours long and include time to savor the dishes you prepare together as a group. La Cocina de Loisaida takes place in the Essex Kitchen -- Essex Market's demonstration and teaching kitchen located on the market's mezzanine level.
La Cocina de Loisaida is a monthly in-person cooking class series presented by The Loisaida Center and Essex Market, where longtime Lower East Sider and home chef María Bido shares authentic Puerto Rican recipes and cooking techniques. Each month we’ll explore a new batch of family favorites, all based in Puerto Rican flavors and using ingredients from Essex Market.

On view in the JCF Gallery at the Manny Cantor Center (197 E Broadway, New York, NY 10002) from Wednesday, October 25th - Friday, December 15th.
CONSTANT | CONSTANTE emerges as a photographic journey through the lens of Marlis Momber and Maylyn “Zero” Iglesias, venerable artist-activists entrenched in the heartbeat of the Lower East Side, NYC. Illuminating impermanence, their photographs transcend time, resurrecting vanished fragments of the LES, echoing in their minds. From the early 1970s to the present, their images are a visual narrative where resilient families thrive amidst the upheaval of cultural battles that have endured for generations.
The frames unveil the dichotomy of the Lower East Side – Momber's haunting silhouettes, a ballet of smokestacks and cranes, converse with Iglesias's rosary beads, gracefully dangling on a metal scaffold rod. Gentrification's reach, captured in fleeting moments, becomes palpable through their lenses. Nuyorican culture, a vivid tapestry in their work, loudly rebelling against the homogeneity of change.
CONSTANT | CONSTANTE mirrors the evolving neighborhood and the strong bond between the artists. Their shared journey, a visual call and response, paints portraits of beautiful brown bodies and big city blocks blending from one scene to the next. The documentation of a whole era appears to have been captured in one long spirited day. The pairing of Marlis’s portrait of local residents hanging out in a vacant lot foreshadows Maylyn’s recent image depicting a mural of similar characters, hidden in the shadows of a lush garden years later. The words framing the scene from above reads, “La Lucha Continua. The Struggle Continues.”
This exhibition is the first time Marlis and Maylyn present artwork together. These selected prints add to the storied lineage of powerful female artists that have taken a defiant stance against ill-intentioned development. Facilitated by the Loisaida Center Cultural Archives, the duo's energy propels them into a dialogue with the past, preserving a visual heritage over 50 years in the making. United against the eroding tide of change, CONSTANT | CONSTANTE is a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Lower East Side and the unyielding power of artistic collaboration.
CONSTANT | CONSTANTE was co-curated and organized by Loisaida Inc., Manny Cantor Center Educational Alliance and the AWWW Collective. Additional support provided by ICP at THE POINT, Frank Fournier and Miguel Anaya.
