Music Made in Heaven is a very special handbell ensemble. Each of our bells has been donated in memory of a child who has died and is inscribed in remembrance. We play to express our joy and gratitude for the lives of these children. We also play to inspire healing and hope in others. Most importantly, our playing is a gift to our children, providing them a way to add beauty to our world through music.
We call it
Music Made in Heaven

MMIH Members Learn More About Bells - and Each Other - at 2019 NC Baptist Handbell Festival
|
The challenges of logistics and traveling three hours in fog and rain, the pleasure of “bonding” time and the excitement of ringing with 22 other handbell choirs were all part of our experience the weekend of February 22 and 23 at the LeGrand Center in Shelby, NC. We rehearsed on an intensive schedule Friday evening and Saturday morning, culminating in a short, well attended sacred concert at 2:00 pm Saturday afternoon in the very large conference (rehearsal) space.

Michael Glasgow, Music Director at the North Raleigh UMC, was our dynamic “clinician,” the term for a festival director whose intention is to create a great musical experience, meld together groups with different levels of experience and teach us new techniques. (“Don’t say ‘trip-uh-let’ to count triplets; we never talk that way! Say 'e-ven-ly' because each syllable IS pronounced evenly to help you
ring
triplets evenly!”)

"Setting up" and "tearing down" involved transporting – and hence loading and unloading – everything in a cold drizzle both Friday and Saturday: 36’of tables, mats, pads, table covers, skirts, music stands, music suitcase, cases for five octaves of bells and chimes, mallets, toolbox, etc., in our rented cargo van.
|
|
To this our conductor, Barbara Marley, added personalized "goody bags"and personalized drink and treat selections for our Friday night post-rehearsal “social bonding” which energized the lobby of our hotel. Carpooling conversations also offered an opportunity for us to get to know each other better outside a ringing setting, especially our new members.

The weekend concluded with a wonderful meal in Shelby at Joe’s Place with Thai dishes and even a vegan stir-fry! All agreed that it was time well spent together doing something we all love with others of like mind under the baton of a terrific clinician. Thanks, Michael and festival organizers, for a great experience!!
