We are excited to welcome Dr. Sean Hayden from TN Wesleyan University for a three-part Summer Lecture Series on Dietrich Bonhoeffer this July in the Parish Hall during the Sunday School hour! We hope you can join us in person (sessions will not be recorded).
Overview: Dietrich Bonhoeffer is widely known as a pastor, theologian, and martyr, executed on personal orders from Hitler only a short time before Allied troops reached the camp where he was held prisoner. Today he is claimed by Christians on both sides of the political spectrum.
Dr. Sean Hayden will explain why both are wrong and how we might learn to think with Bonhoeffer about faith in our time. The first lecture will explore the cultural and political setting of his time, as well as his understanding of the knowledge of God and scripture. The second lecture will look at his writings on spirituality and ethics. The last lecture will examine his controversial letters from prison.
About Dr. Hayden: Dr. Sean Hayden is Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Tennessee Wesleyan University. A native of rural western KY, he attended Wofford College on a football scholarship and earned his MDiv at Emory University, before taking an MA and PhD at Vanderbilt University. An Ordained Elder, he has served United Methodist congregations in the North Georgia, Tennessee, and Holston Conferences for more than 20 years.

Stephen Ministry Requests Your Prayers | |
|
“So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer” (Ezra 8:23). Finding Stephen Ministers is the next step for our congregation’s Stephen Ministry, and we are currently praying for the individuals God is calling to serve as caregivers. Please include this need in your prayers—and if you’re interested in the opportunity to serve, contact Pat Clendenen at pclendenen@churchstreetumc.org.

Church Directory Update
Thank you to the many members who have updated their information in Instant Church Directory! On the advice of our church's IT security experts, we have decided to remove birthdays from view in the directory to protect our members' data. Names with birthdays are personally identifiable information that, if in the wrong hands, can compromise yours and others’ data. If you need to know someone's birthday, you may still call the church office to request that information.
If you haven't had a chance to create your login for the directory and are a church member with an email address, please do so before July 15 to ensure your information is correct. You may submit changes to your information and photo once you have created your login.
Attention Small Group Leaders! Between now and July 15, we will be adding small group affiliations to the directory, so you will be able to see Sunday school class members, committee members, and other small group members in the directory. If you are a small group leader, please send the names only of the individuals in your group to Katie Strangis before July 15 so an updated roster may be included.
Before July 15: If you have information to change before the printed directory is released, please do so before July 15. If you would like a print directory, please let the church office know before July 15 so we may reserve it for you.
If you have questions at any time, please reach out to Katie Strangis at 865-521-0299.
