Updates
Plenty of new announcements to pass on this week, so lets get started!
First, the folks at NIS let me know of a production delay this week with the upcoming House of Five Leaves Complete Collection DVD Set (Eps #1-12) (Standard Edition), which was set to street next week on Mar 5th. NIS says they don't expect us to have our copies now until around March 11th, so we went ahead and set the street date up a week to Mar 12th.
A lot of people have been asking about the status of Media Blasters re-release of the Shamanic Princess DVD since it missed the January street date. I finally got some official word that the new date of it will be April 9th. We'll see, won't we?
We added two Nozomi releases to the catalog for pre-order this week - the Hyakko TV Series Complete Collection DVD (Eps #1-13) and the Victorian Romance Emma Season #2 DVD Collection (Eps #13-24) (Lite Box) - both of which are scheduled for April. Don't forget, we're 40% off on Nozomi titles everyday - pre-order, post order, whatever - which means you "ain't got to wait for no stupid sale" here. -_^
Funimation sent over their June schedule yesterday, and we've got it up on the store site for pre-order. Here's what's coming
New Releases:
Appleseed XIII Complete Collection DVD/BD Combo Set (Limited Edition) - Jun 4
Re-Releases / Re-Prices:
Birdy the Mighty: Decode Complete Collection DVD Box (Eps #1-26) (S.A.V.E. Edition) - Jun 4 Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom DVD Set (Eps #1-26) (S.A.V.E. Edition) - Jun 4 Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom BLURAY Set (Eps #1-26) (S.A.V.E. Edition) - Jun 4 Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings (Season 1 & 2) DVD/BD Combo Set (Eps #1-26) - Jun 11 Chrome Shelled Regios Complete Collection DVD Set (Eps #1-24) (S.A.V.E. Edition) - Jun 18
Remember when I used to do a special section for these? I know, you're looking at it like I am and going "really, is that it?" I'm glad to see them bringing out Appleseed so quickly, but I'm hoping maybe they will add more new material to June between now and then. Funi's new release schedules have been pretty thin of new material all year so far. Releasing four or five S.A.V.E editions a month is all fine and well, but I don't see how they can make payroll averaging only one or two new titles a month. Does anyone have any idea how many new licenses Funi has announced picking up in the last six months? I haven't bothered to count, but it doesn't seem like many. Is Funi on the way to becoming a one title a month producer? Houston, do we have a problem?...
I'm very pleased to announce that we have added two new Ghibli releases that Beuna Vista will be bringing out on BLURAY in May:
Howl's Moving Castle BLURAY/DVD Combo Set
My Neighbor Totoro BLURAY/DVD Combo Set
Alas, still no Spirited Away BD, but I guess they gotta hold something back for next year.

Odds and Sods
Viz Media has announced it will be publishing two manga boxed sets this fall as part of its Shonen Jump line. Arriving on October 1st, the Bakuman Box Set will collect all twenty volumes of Tsugumi Ohba's series about Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi's adventures in manga creation. The set will also include a bonus mini-comic entitled "Otter No. 11" and a full-color, double-sided poster. First started in 2010, Bakuman has been a regular feature in Viz's weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The Bakuman Box Set will retail for $159.99 and is rated T for teens. The second Viz box set is the One Piece Box Set: East Blue & Baroque Works. Collecting volumes 1 through 23, this box set contains the first six years of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece series and the "East Blue" and "Baroque Works" story arcs from 2003 through 2009. Bonus features include an exclusive poster and mini-comic.
I always love those big fat Viz manga box sets. They make great Christmas gifts! Glad to see One Piece getting the treatment this year.
Anime studios and production companies Aniplex, Sunrise, Toei Animation, TMS Entertainment, Nihon Ad Systems (NAS), Dentsu, and Asatsu-DK (ADK) confirmed with ANN that they are collaborating to launch a new anime streaming and commerce service for overseas fans called "Daisuki." President and CEO Kunihiko Shibata leads Daisuki, which will launch in April. According to the service, titles such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Mobile Suit Gundam, One Piece, Lupin the 3rd, and Prince of Tennis are "ready to be delivered." Daisuki also plans to stream anime titles nearly simultaneously with their Japanese broadcasts, as well as live events.
See, the end game has always been for the Japanese companies to come in with direct subsidiaries and eventually cut out the domestic companies that do localizations (everyone from Funimation to Crunchyroll). That way they don't have to split the profits with anyone else. Also, I love this from the comments under the post on ANN:
"Now taking bets on how they screw this up. Do I hear locally "translated" subtitles? Perhaps a subscription fee five times that of Crunchyroll? Seriously, name one time Japanese anime distributors have worked directly on foreign releases and it hasn't gone wrong in some way (yes, Aniplex pricing absolutely counts). Keeping an eye on this in case of a miracle, but keeping expectations safely low."
Indeed.
Aniplex announced recently that the Fate/Zero television anime series will be getting an English dub and will stream on Viz Media's Neon Alley service on the PlayStation 3 starting this spring. Aniplex released the series in two subtitle-only Blu-ray Disc box sets in North America last year. Niconico and Crunchyroll both streamed the two seasons of the series as they aired.
Viz is paying for the dub, and Bang Zoom will be using different voice actors for it. A few people have inquired to me if I think this will ultimately result in a cheap dubbed home video release of Fate/Zero from Viz since Viz has stated that they want to release everything they are showing on Neon Alley also on DVD or BD, or both. Frankly, I find it doubtful that AniPlex would allow them to do it (or for Blue Exorcist either). After all, they have already localized those God awfully expensive Japanese sets into the US market, and wouldn't that just be sticking it right up the ass of the folks who paid $800 for the series subtitled, only to have AniPlex allow Viz to bring out a dual language version on the cheap. No folks, I just can't see that happening - they just can't possibly think that North American Anime fans are that dumb.
You can see AniPlex's trailer of the dub here.
Internet service providers, such as AT&T and Verizon, are beginning to implement The Copyright Alert System this week. The warning system will alert users if their IP addresses have been linked to allegedly unauthorized file-sharing through peer-to-peer software. The user will receive up to six warnings before the ISP will takes further actions, including slowing the users connection and redirecting internet traffic. The provider will continue these methods until the user acknowledges the notices or reviews educational materials about copyright law. Users who wish to challenge their ISPs on the charges must pay a US$35 fee, which is refunded if the review finds in their favor. Each ISP is expected to implement their own system. The first warnings serve to educate the user, while later warnings require the user to acknowledge they have willfully committed an illegal act. Jill Lesser, the director of the Center for Copyright Infringement, the organization behind the system, said in a blog post Monday that the program is "meant to educate rather than punish, and direct (users) to legal alternatives." Other officials involved in the system's creation acknowledged that it is unlikely to stop the biggest violators.
I'm sure you all realize that the ultimate end game for this is for content providers to be able to block downloaders at the ISP level. Torrent users, or more likely, torrent seeders, may find themselves eventually getting cut off from the net at their ISP. And no, there is nothing fair about it at all.
The ninth volume of Kodansha's release of Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi ranked at #6 on Nielsen BookScan's list of top 20 graphic novels in American bookstores for January. The volume is one of four manga titles on the list: Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto volume 59, the only manga title on December's list, rose from #15 to #13, and Yana Toboso's Black Butler volume 12 and Tite Kubo's Bleach volume 54 ranked at #17 and #18 respectively.
Sailor Moon is still rocking the book store charts. :-) For us, it's been a great seller, but our number #1 selling series is still Rosario.
And finally, in my weekly 'hey, if you think about it this is some pretty scary shit' column - all I've been hearing about this week is Google Glass and how it's going to revolutionize life as we know it. These little gems that are going to change the way we live forever are coming about as fast these days as Funimation does re-releases, but the horror of what these things could potentially do I just cannot understate. Not only yet another silly 'social networking' interface that promises to eventually live stream everyones mundane daily life into someones twisted version of a collective web utopia, they are also a wearable live video camera, and my prediction is something more along the lines of that the people putting on the web everything other people are doing while wearing these things will ultimately encounter a violent end unless they shut them off... Nitrozac and Snaggy get it about right here. Just my two cents.
Yeah yeah, I know, resistance is futile...
Hot Off the Truck!
