Updates
With everyone at the beach this week (except me of course) trying to get in a few more days of summer vacation before they head back to school next week, it's been a rather slow news week. I've still got a couple of updates to pass on, so lets go!
Studio Ghibli will collaborate with Frank Marshal to produce an English dub for Miyazaki's The Wind Rises film. Marshall was the executive producer of the dubs for From Up On Poppy Hill (which comes out next week), Arrietty, and Ponyo. Disney also officially announced that they will release The Wind Rises in R1. It just came out in Japan last month, so I imagine it will be at least a year before we see it washing up on our shores. That's OK though, it will be well worth the wait. :-) Anime recycler Discotek announced this week that they have licensed the former ADV series Ghost Stories (Gakko no Kaidan). They said they will release the series next year on DVD with the "hilarious English dub" and English subtitles, along with the original Japanese language track. Still hanging on by their fingernails, Media Blasters announced yesterday that they have picked up the Ultimate Girls television anime series. Aside from releasing it at some point in the future on DVD, they didn't give any other details. The original 12-episode series aired in Japan in 2005. Yuji Mutoh directed the series at Studio Matrix, and Satoru Nishizono handled the series composition. The series follows Silk and her two friends, who are accidentally crushed to death during a monster attack by the city's protector UFO-Man. UFO-Man brings the girls back to life with his power but now they must also act as the city's protectors. | | In Ultimate Girls 3 girls are given special powers and skin tight outfits to fight monsters and (try to) keep their naughty bits covered while they do it. Camel toes of course, don't count. And they have to be quick, since each episode is only 13 minutes long. |
And finally, we got in a few cases of the new fixed S.A.O. DVD sets this week, and pre-orders have begun to ship. If you've been waiting on one look for it to arrive in a mailbox near you real soon. Still no word, except that they didn't print enough to begin with, on when more of the S.A.O. BD sets are going to be coming, but I hope it's soon since the set #2 (both DVD and BD) in due out in a couple of weeks - I just hope these guys haven't bitten off more than they can chew. I swear, some companies in this industry could fuck up a cup of coffee if they tried hard enough... -_^ Fabulous RACS Facts - Did you know...? ...that we use recycled or environmentally friendly packaging materials for all of your outgoing shipments. The superior quality shipping boxes, mailers, and cartons that we use to ship your orders in are made from at least 20% post consumer recycled content, and that the anti-static packaging peanuts that we use (still the best packing material available for Anime orders - period) are made from 100% recycled content. Here at the warehouse, we segregate all of our cardboard and paper waste into a special dumpster that allows the refuse company to pick it up separately for recycling and we even have a special German made machine in house that allows us to recycle some of our cardboard waste right back into shredded packaging material to use in your orders. The official YouTube channel for Donyatsu, the anime adaptation of Yuusuke Kozaki's surreal manga about animal/snack hybrids in a post-apocalyptic world, began streaming the second anime short on Wednesday. In the short, the feline/bagel Begaru (Keiji Fujiwara) has gotten a stomach ache from eating too many potato chips that are three years old. Feline/donut Donyatsu (Yukari Tamura) and feline/baumkuchen Bamcougar attempt to heal his stomach ache in their own ways.
Check it out here.
The Deadline website reported on Wednesday that Dreamworks is negotiating the rights to remake Hirokazu Kore-eda's Like Father, Like Son (Soshite Chichi ni Naru) film from Fuji TV. According to the website, Dreamworks co-founder Steven Spielberg became interested in this live-action film about babies switched at birth, after seeing it as the head of the Cannes Film Festival jury this year.
Japanese film news website Cinema Today began streaming a short battle scene from the upcoming computer-graphics film Space Pirate Captain Harlock. The clip features the title character fighting while inside a battleship. The film remakes the classic anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock with Toei Animation's highest production budget ever at the equivalent of more than 30 million U.S. dollars. Shun Oguri and Haruma Miura star as the title pirate and the new character Yama, respectively.
Oh man, I'm totally am going to have to start working on a new Harlock cos-play outfit. My old costume is from a few years, and a few less pounds ago...
The October issue of ASCII Media Works's Dengeki G's Magazine is reporting on Friday that the Hanamonogatari anime will air on television in Japan next year. The heroine of the story is Suruga Kanbaru, and the story is set after Koyomi graduates from high school. The current Monogatari Series Second Season covers five stories of NisiOisin's original novels - Nekomogatari (White), Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari, and Koimonogatari.
You could spend your whole life searching for the perfect Monogatari, and it would not be a wasted life...
Viz Media announced at its Shojo Beat panel at Japan Expo on Sunday that it has licensed two new manga: Arina Tanemura's Phantom Thief Jeanne (Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne) and Tomu Ohmi's Spell of Desire (Majo no Biyaku), and will ship the first volumes next year in March and August, respectively. CMX Manga previously published all seven volumes of Phantom Thief Jeanne between 2005 to 2007. CMX Manga then closed in 2010. The story follows a seemingly normal girl named Maron, who secretly fights demons that have possessed people and paintings, but is labelled a thief and a vandal by the authorities. Viz Media also announced that Kazune Kawahara's High School Debut manga is getting a 3-in-1 omnibus release. The first volume of the new release will ship in February. The company previously released the 13-volume series between 2008 and 2010.
So glad to see High School Debut coming back into print!
Gaku Tsugano, the creator of the manga adaptation of Nagaru Tanigawa's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels, is announcing in the October issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine on Monday that the manga will end in the next chapter. The final chapter is scheduled to be published in the November issue on September 26. Tsugano commented on the upcoming final chapter, saying, "Next time is the final chapter! I'll do my best to the end!" The manga has been running the magazine for almost eight years, with serialization beginning in 2005's November issue. Kadokawa released the 19th volume of the manga in Japan in June, and Yen Presss released the 15th volume in North America in April.
All good things come to an end... ~sigh~
Yen Press announced at its panel at Japan Expo USA that it has licensed Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online and Accel World light novel series. The company also announced it will release the Sword Art Online Aincrad and Sword Art Online Fairy Dance manga arcs, as well as Magica Quartet and Hanokage's Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Different Story manga series. Yen Press also mentioned at the panel that Yuki Kodama and Kanata Yoshino's Blood Lad spinoff manga Bloody Brat will ship in March 2014.
I was a little surprised there weren't more announcements out of Japan Expo, but we'll take these!
