New Legislation Means More Spay-Neuter Surgeries
On March 23, House Bill 1201, the Companion Animal Sterilization Bill, passed in the Indiana Senate with a unanimous vote of 50-0!

This life-saving law ensures that dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before being adopted out of shelters or rescue groups.  The next step is for Governor Pence to sign it into law!

SNSI thanks the bill's author Representative Mike Karickhoff and co-author Rep. Linda Lawson, along with Sen. Brandt Hershman for their leadership roles. SNSI also thanks the ASPCA, and the many animal lovers that contacted legislators to urge the bill's passage.
March Madness to Raise Funds
SNSI is participating in Brackets for Good, an online, bracket-style fundraising tournament. The event helps increase exposure for groups like SNSI, but also allows us to compete for a chance to win $10,000! Each week our supporters can vote for SNSI, and each week the field will narrow through the final run-off between the top two Indy non-profits! Learn more and vote at www.bfg.org.

Have A Heart Campaign Wraps Up
Thanks to the 31 vets across Indiana who participated in our February "Have A Heart" campaign whereby anyone can receive reduced costs on spaying and neutering their pets.   SNSI was pleased to add a new vet to the list, Healing Hands Veterinary Care, in Anderson. Check out and support our entire list of shared-mission vets here . When seeking vet services, consider seeing one that supports our spaying and neutering campaigns.
Community Effort to Save Firehouse Pups
In January, a box of seven 5-week-old puppies were abandoned at the Indianapolis Station 22 Firehouse.

The firefighters took the pups, all suffering from colds, to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control, where they received medical attention, vaccinations, and deworming. Fortunately for those pups, Rescue Farm in Poland, Indiana, was able to locate a foster home and continue the medications.

SPOT Clinic, a low-cost veterinary clinic in Terre Haute, vaccinated them and agreed to continue care as they grew. And, SNSI covered the cost to spay/neuter through the Pet Friendly License Plate fund to ensure no future unwanted dogs in the community.

These pups will be ready for adoption in a couple of weeks, and it all happened because so many pitched in to help! If you are interested in adopting a Firehouse Pup, please visit www.rescuefarm.org.
SVPS Works to "Get Them Fixed"
Springs Valley Pet Services, Inc. (SVPS), in French Lick (Orange County), has been in the trenches trapping community cats, helping to fix and rehome dogs, raising puppies, and even dabbling in the lost pet arena. Though SVPS just got up and running last September, they are already making a positive impact. SNSI connected with SVPS soon after to issue Pet Friendly Group Grant and Community Cat certificates, and provide SNAP certificates to low-income residents.

SVPS President Jennifer Hill and a few key volunteers are at the heart of SVPS.

"Many of the individuals here have a very hard time caring for their families, let alone a pet. We struggle with poverty and educating the public on the proper way to treat animals," said Hill.

Because of the incredible need, especially with free-roaming cats in the community, SNSI issued SVPS extra Community Cat Program certificates to help with their efforts. "We have more animals, especially cats, than we do adoptees or available rescues," Hill continued.

SNSI has been able to fund SVPS with their needs because of the success of the Pet Friendly License Plate.  Help save animal lives - get your license plate today.
