Join us for DisneylandForward open house

You're invited to an informational open house on DisneylandForward on Wednesday, April 10, from 6-8 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center at 250 E. Center St., next to City Hall.

This is a chance to ask questions of city staff in an informal, open house setting. You're welcome to drop in anytime at your leisure from 6 to 8 p.m.

The DisneylandForward proposal is set to be considered by the Anaheim City Council on April 16.

This marks the final phase of consideration after years of community meetings, City Council and Planning Commission workshops, information sharing, news coverage and a recent Planning Commission recommendation to City Council for approval.

The open house is a chance to learn more and ask questions about the proposal.

If you’re looking to share your thoughts on the proposal, we encourage you to attend the April 16 City Council meeting or email your comments to publiccomment@anaheim.net.

Beach Boulevard motel demolition

Brighter horizons are coming to Beach Boulevard with the demolition of yet another problem motel.

Last month we demolished the Anaheim Lodge, a 45-room motel that sadly had become a site for prostitution, drugs, crime and inhumane living conditions.

Anaheim bought the motel for $7.6 million in late 2022 and began working to relocate longer-term residents.

We've spent more than $550,000 in the past year to move people still living there to better places.

With the former motel now gone, the site will become affordable apartments and townhomes, in development with the neighboring Covered Wagon motel site, which Anaheim bought and tore down in 2023.

This is the third motel on Beach that Anaheim has bought, cleared and demolished since 2021 and the fourth going back to 2002.

The problems of Beach are real, but so is our progress.

We are working to rebuild Beach as a livable, walkable street for residents now and to come with well-run businesses that serve our community.

Partnering for safe schools

Anaheim Police officers are returning to campuses as part of a community policing initiative to ensure safe schools.

Six officers will work at Anaheim Union High School District high schools with a seventh at Sycamore Junior High.

The officers provide safety and peace of mind and also serve as a resource for administrators, teachers, students and parents.

The officers are returning to schools after a pause during the pandemic, when kids were learning remotely. Costs for officers at schools are shared equally by the city and Anaheim Union High School District.

Officers on campus address any public safety issues that may arise but are not involved in any student discipline or enforcement of school regulations.

They will advise on overall campus safety and any law violations on campus and give educational presentations and work with parent-teacher, student and other groups.

Big A home opener; Ducks host Anaheim night

It's that time of year, when Anaheim's professional sports worlds meet.

The 2024 Angels Baseball season is underway on the road with the team returning for their home opener on Friday, April 5.

The Angels take on the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium of Anaheim for a weekend series as part of a homestand through April 10.

As always, the start of a new season brings optimism for the rebuilding Angels.

But, win or lose, there’s nothing like a hot dog, beer, ice cream helmet or whatever your favorite ballpark treat is at the Big A.

Across the freeway, the Anaheim Ducks are hosting Anaheim night on Friday, April 12, against the visiting Calgary Flames.

Anaheim residents can buy discounted tickets here, with terrace seats starting at $22 and plaza seats behind the glass starting at $76.

It's also $5 Friday with hot dogs, select beers, popcorn and more at $5 — the same as when the Ducks debuted 30 years ago in 1993!

Spring is a great time to support Anaheim's teams. See you there!

Ensuring cost-effective water, electricity

In cities all around Anaheim, electricity and water bills are on the rise. But here in Anaheim, we're continuing to provide homes and businesses with reliable, high-quality water and power at cost-effective rates.

Anaheim Public Utilities, our city's not-for-profit provider of water and electricity, is updating rates to offset operating costs — but with no significant change for typical household bills.

Average water bills are set to see a modest decline of about 1 percent, while average power bills are set to hold steady.

What is changing is the customer charge portion of bills, which recovers fixed costs we incur for operating our city's extensive water and electricity systems.

For water, the customer charge is increasing by about $5, while lower charges for using water are offsetting the change. The result is a roughly 1 percent decline, or about 70 cents on a $75 water bill.

Even with the change, Anaheim's customer charge is still about 30 percent lower than the average across Orange County.

The customer charge for electricity is going up by about $3 and is offset by an adjustment to stabilize rates with no change for the typical bill.

Overall, Anaheim's electricity rates are about 40 percent lower than in neighboring cities.

You'll still be able to save on water and electricity through conservation as usage makes up 80 percent to 90 percent of typical bills.

We're also expanding discounts to help with affordability for seniors, those with disabilities and veterans who qualify based on income.

Income-qualified discounts for those with individual meters are increasing by about 10 percent to 12 percent.

For those who share meters at mobile home parks or other communities, discounts are increasing by $5.
