Speed limits are changing — going down — across Anaheim.
More than 500 signs with new speed limits will be updated across Anaheim now through August.
You’ll want to make sure you’re reading speed limit signs and checking your speed as you drive in your neighborhood, around town or commuting through Anaheim.
This won't be a big change. Speed limits are being lowered based on a study that looked at how fast we actually drive on our streets.
The new or unchanged speed limits reflect what the vast majority of drivers, 85 percent, drive on the section of roads studied.
We’re lowering speed limits to make our streets safer — the faster the speed, the higher the risk of a severe crash with serious injuries or deaths.
Changes are playing out across our city along all types of roads. You can see a complete list of changes at Anaheim.net/speedlimits.
Most new speed limits are going down by 5 mph, with a majority changing from 40 mph to 35 mph. Another 10 are going down by 10 mph.
In all, 169 sections of road will see reduced speed limits with 155 remaining unchanged.
As signs go up and we all get used to new speed limits, Anaheim Police will be helping us educate drivers with warnings.
During the transition, officers will use discretion to make everyone aware of and following speed limits on their own.
But new signs are never an excuse for excessive speeding, and drivers exceeding limits may still be ticketed.
And, no, we’re not changing speed limits to issue more tickets. Revenue from tickets is never our motivation.
What revenue Anaheim sees from tickets doesn’t cover the cost of officers, motorcycles, patrol cars, other equipment and all that goes into issuing tickets.
The lower limits are part of our ongoing work to make streets safe in Anaheim.
