Anaheim continues to respond to the coronavirus outbreak with vaccines, testing, community assistance and updates at Anaheim.net/coronavirus and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The newsletter is a weekly summary. This week's issue includes:

  • Anaheim and OC case update
  • Vaccine update

We thank everyone in Anaheim for doing your part to fight coronavirus in our community, and we want you to know that as your city, we're here for you.
Anaheim cases: 41,870
We continue to see low COVID-19 case numbers for Anaheim and Orange County, as we increase vaccinations and stop the spread of the virus.

It's important we continue to fight COVID in all we do and get vaccinated, if you haven't done so already.

Anaheim saw an increase of 30 cases in the past seven days, down from 57 last week, while Orange County saw 383 new cases, down from 508.

Anaheim is at a cumulative 41,870 cases, with 5,383 among children.

Orange County is at a cumulative 254,231 cases, with 26,611 among children.

Sadly, Anaheim has seen 872 people pass from complications of COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus. The county has seen a total of 5,000 deaths.

Our hearts go out to the families who have lost someone dear to them.

The county has processed a total of 3,722,167 polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, tests, the standard for diagnosing COVID-19 cases.

Anaheim and Orange County remain in orange Tier 3, the second most permissive in the state's reopening framework. But the yellow Tier 4 is within reach.

The state's tiers are primarily based on two measurements, each determined by calculating the seven-day average with a seven-day lag:

  • Average positivity rate of testing
  • Average new daily cases per 100,000 residents

The county's current case rate is 2.4 per 100,000 residents.

The county's current positivity rate is 1.3 percent.

The county's current positivity rate among our harder-hit, low-income communities is 1.4 percent.

The colored, restrictive tier system is set to be retired as early as June 15, with Anaheim, Orange County and all of California moving to a largely normal operations with masks, vaccines and testing. The next phase of reopening is known as Beyond the Blueprint.

UPDATE: Starting May 8, we go from daily to weekly updates of case data on our website, Facebook and Twitter. The move reflects where we are with coronavirus and provides better context as daily numbers continue at low levels not seen since the earliest days of the pandemic locally.
Vaccines: 60 percent in Anaheim
Nearly 60 percent of eligible Anaheim residents have received at least one vaccination with many of them now fully vaccinated.

That’s a great milestone for our city.

Vaccines have driven down COVID-19 cases and paved the way for fans at Angel Stadium of Anaheim and Honda Center and last week’s reopening of the Disneyland Resort.

Because we’ve come so far since January, we’re seeing a change in our vaccination effort.

The Super POD at Anaheim Convention Center will shut down for good, with June 5 as our last day of shots.

The convention center site, which opened Feb. 23, has given more than 250,000 shots and played a major role getting us to where we are today.

The upcoming closure follows the shutdown of the Anaheim POD at Disneyland Resort on April 30.

Through June 5, you can still get vaccinated at the convention center. You don’t even need an appointment. Just walk right in!

It’s easier than ever and takes about half an hour from parking to departure, including 15 minutes of observation time.

We now are focusing on more vaccination clinics in our neighborhoods, with one today at Brookhurst Community Center, Saturday at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center and May 14 at the East Anaheim Gymnasium.

On top of the gains we’ve seen with our large vaccination sites, neighborhood clinics should help us get to critical levels of what’s known as herd immunity.

That’s when enough Anaheim residents have been vaccinated to protect those who might not be able to, either because they’re not eligible or for personal medical considerations.

There’s no hard number for herd immunity, but generally it’s 75 percent to 80 percent.

When we look at herd immunity, we also can factor in those who have recovered from COVID-19. In Anaheim, that’s about 11 percent of our population, or about 40,000 people.

For those who have been vaccinated, thank you!

For those who haven’t, there’s no need to wait any longer. Getting vaccinated has never been easier. It’s free, safe and, as we can see before our very eyes, it works.

After a devastating year, these are the brightest days yet for Anaheim in the pandemic.

Help keep our gains going by getting vaccinated or encouraging your loved ones to get the shot.
