Dear Community Leaders and Members of Anne Arundel County,

Yesterday evening, our team had a great time attending National Night Out events across the county. Hopefully, you and your family had the opportunity to join law enforcement personnel and community members in your police district for some fun. Check out a few photos below.

Registration is open for our next River Days Festival! Visit aacounty.org/riverdays and sign up to join us on Sunday, August 11th, at the West River Center to celebrate our local rivers. Boat rides at this festival will be available first come, first served to attendees. Watermark's Miss Anne 1 & 2 and the Annapolis Maritime Museum's Wilma Lee will be providing rides throughout the day, giving you plenty of chances to enjoy a fun and educational cruise on the West River.

The Department of Recreation and Parks will also be providing kayak lessons, and reservations for those are open online now. Visit aacounty.org/riverdays for more information, and to sign up to join us.

Maryland PSC Orders Utilities to Give 30 Days Advance Notice to Customers at Risk of Service Termination

Directive adds 16 days to current notice period through the summer

On July 23, 2024, the Maryland Public Service Commission ordered utilities to give customers 30 days notice, instead of the usual 14 days, before shutting off power due to non-payment of bills. This provision will be in effect until September 1, 2024, and will help protect customers during this period of extreme summer heat.

On June 18, 2024, the Office of People’s Counsel (OPC) petitioned for an emergency

order prohibiting utility companies from shutting off service to residential customers

until September 15, 2024. OPC also requested that the heat index (a combination

of temperature and humidity) be incorporated into restrictions on service

terminations.

"In consideration of OPC’s petition and the comments filed by Maryland utilities and

the Maryland Energy Advocates Coalition, the Commission finds that the forecasted

record high heat in summer 2024 represents a risk to public health that justifies

temporary emergency relief," the Commission said.

The Department of Aging and Disabilities Telephone Reassurance Program Seeks Volunteers

The Department of Aging and Disabilities Telephone Reassurance Program is seeking volunteers to make well-check phone calls to residents of Anne Arundel County. Volunteers connect with older adults and individuals with disabilities to help them remain independent in their homes for as long as possible. We are currently recruiting volunteers to assist with telephone calls one or more days each month between 8:00-10:30 a.m. Calls can be made at the volunteer's home. Telephone Reassurance volunteers must complete an application, a criminal background check, and required training.

The Telephone Reassurance Program places daily well-check telephone calls to older adults and adults with disabilities who are living alone in Anne Arundel County. These individuals can count on a friendly telephone call every day of the year. Family members, who may live outside of Anne Arundel County, have the assurance that their loved ones are in daily contact with a Department of Aging and Disabilities volunteer. The program helps individuals maintain their independence and their contact with the outside world. It is also a great way for volunteers to support their community and gain a sense of purpose.

If you are a resident of Anne Arundel County and are interested in volunteering for the Telephone Reassurance Program, call 410-222-4339 for an application. TTY users, please call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1.
