Dear Community Leaders and Members of Anne Arundel County,
The Office of Community Engagement and Constituent Services is thrilled to announce a new initiative, EngageArundel. EngageArundel consists of a webinar series, in-person informational sessions, and a collection of resources designed to empower community members with the tools they need to participate and advocate within county government. It is also designed to increase awareness of all the great programs, events, and resources that are available to our residents.
The first webinar, Engaging with County Government, will be held on Wednesday, September 25th, at 6:00 p.m. You can register at aacounty.org/engagearundel or by clicking the flyer below. We hope you can join us for the start of this exciting series.

County Executive Announces Senior Staff Changes | |
County Executive Steuart Pittman announced the mid-September departure of Chief of Staff Jeff Amoros, and named current Deputy Chief of Staff Jenny Proebstle as the administration’s new chief of staff. Proebstle’s promotion will take effect Monday, Sept. 16.

Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works Minimizes Curbside Collection Disruptions | |
Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) has implemented proactive measures to minimize disruption to curbside collection services in Pasadena, Severna Park, Odenton, and Laurel areas. Following notification of a potential strike by Teamsters Local 570, which represents curbside collection employees for Ecology Services, Inc., DPW worked to secure additional resources to ensure continuity of essential services.

Operation Clean Sweep - September 2024 | |
This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will implement its next phase of Operation Clean Sweep, a statewide effort to remove litter on State roads throughout Maryland.
The State Highway Administration team will perform litter removal and mowing operations along highly traveled State-maintained roadways during the first week of September (Tuesday September 3 – Friday September 6, 2024). Drivers are reminded to remain alert for work crews and to reduce speeds when approaching these maintenance operations.
Customers can help by reporting litter on state roads by clicking here or they may also contact the SHA District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.
| Enhancement of firefighting and rescue capabilities with the arrival of a new 50' Metal Shark Defiant NXT Fireboat |
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department officially welcomed the newest addition to its maritime fleet with the first of two state-of-the-art 50-foot Defiant NXT Fireboats yesterday at Sandy Point State Park. Representatives from Metal Shark, which manufactured the boat, delivered the first fireboat via waterways from Louisiana to Maryland. This powerful and versatile vessel is set to significantly enhance the county's ability to respond to emergencies on the water.

| Free National Preparedness Month Training Opportunities |
September is National Preparedness Month, which is dedicated to encouraging everyone to prepare for disasters. This year for National Preparedness Month the Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is celebrating by helping you become more prepared through FREE training!
OEM has a variety of training opportunities available during the month of September, including:

Extreme Event Simulation Game
This engaging role-playing game puts players in the hot seat, testing their ability to build community resilience by making critical decisions during a simulated disaster.

CPR
Learn the lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR and how to use an AED in this fast-paced, 1.5-hour class. No medical experience is required.

Stop the Bleed
This hands-on class teaches you how to control bleeding in emergency situations. You'll learn techniques like applying direct pressure, packing wounds, and using a tourniquet. No medical experience is required.

Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE)
Learn valuable strategies and tactics to help you stay safe and protect others during an active shooter situation.

In recognition of Hunger Action Month this September, Lifeline 100 will donate 30% of all registration fees collected (up to $2,500) from September 1-11 to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank (AACFB). Food insecurity is a significant challenge for many of our Anne Arundel County neighbors.
"AACFB has witnessed a significant increase in the number of people seeking assistance at food pantries. We currently support more than 50,000 points of service every month. Over the past year, AACFB distributed 4,054,377 pounds of food and basic necessities, including 799,654 pounds of fresh produce and 563,444 pounds of lean proteins, through our 77 Network Partners located across Anne Arundel County as well as through the AACFB’s Mobile Pantry Program", said, Leah Paley, CEO of Anne Arundel County Food Bank. President of BikeAAA, Jon Korin, added, "We are especially proud to support AACFB in its mission to alleviate food insecurity in Anne Arundel County. We also appreciate AACFB’s partnership, along with the Anne Arundel County Police Department and others, with our Wheels of Hope bike refurbishment program. The program collects donated adult and children's bikes, which are refurbished by BikeAAA volunteers and distributed to people in need."

Draft Green Notice: Homeowners Association Documents Checklist and Submittal Requirement | |
The Anne Arundel County Office of Planning and Zoning, in coordination with the Department of Inspections and Permits, provides a guidance memo and documents checklist to notify all interested parties of the minimum requirements for Homeowners Association (HOA) documents. The purpose of this checklist is to ensure that the HOA documents clearly articulate the obligations of the HOA.

Train to Become Part of the Anne Arundel-Annapolis Community Emergency Response Team
Anne Arundel - Annapolis Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has announced its Fall 2024 dates for its 20-hour in-person CERT Basic Training class. Volunteer to become a trained member of your community in emergency response. The training will be held on Friday, September 27 from 6pm-9pm, Sat., September 28 from 8am-5pm, and Sun., September 29, 2024 from 8am-4pm at the Fire Training Academy in Millersville. A disaster simulation will be held on Sunday, October 6 from 1pm-5pm at the same location. Everyone completing the course receives a nationally recognized certification and the opportunity to join Anne Arundel-Annapolis CERT as a member. This is also an opportunity to potentially volunteer to support the County Office of Emergency Management following a disaster. Our next class will not be until Spring 2025. September is Emergency Preparedness Month. These upcoming events from the Office of Emergency Management are available for FREE to nonprofit staff members working in Anne Arundel County as well as their volunteers: CPR training on September 7th or 9th and Extreme Event role-playing on September 16th.

Baltimore Community Foundation Key Bridge Small Business Support
Submit a Letter of Intent to be Invited to Apply
Nonprofit grantees will help BCF support communities impacted by the Key Bridge collapse, including those in northern Anne Arundel County. The Maryland Tough Baltimore Strong Key Bridge Small Business Support exists to provide relief in terms of technical assistance and place-based investments to support impacted small businesses and the communities in which they are located.

United Way of Central Maryland Food Resiliency Grant
Application Deadline: September 12, 2024
The 2025-2026 Food Resiliency Grant is an opportunity for organizations with total annual operating budgets of $500,000 or less to receive up to $10,000 per year for 2 years to carry out community-centered projects that are aimed at building food resiliency in Central Maryland. One organization in Anne Arundel County will be selected.

U.S. Economic Development Administration Good Jobs Challenge
Application Deadline: September 27, 2024
EDA is now accepting applications for the FY 2024 Good Jobs Challenge Notice of Funding Opportunity, which will invest $25 million into high-quality, locally led workforce training programs. Lead applicants of a sectoral partnership that advance a key technology focus area should note the preference for dealing with workers impacted by changes in technology as well as including worker voice in their partnerships.
