Dear Members and Friends of the Schenectady JCC,

School is out, the JCC’s outdoor pool at the William and Estelle Golub Family Park has been open for a month, and this past Monday, Schenectady Camp Chaverim (“Friends”) and Camp Galgalim (“Wheels” Teen Camp) opened to a rousing start.

JCC Summer is in full swing!

There is record attendance for camp this summer. As I’ve said multiple times, camp is an experience that is more than the fun times campers enjoy. The building of lifelong socialization skills goes on daily. In a world where screens move viewers towards more physical and communicative isolation, camp stands as a strong counterbalance towards that tendency. Influence and persuasion are the tools of conflict resolution at camp; “use your words” was never taken as seriously as at camp. And the experiences that camp provides mean to challenge campers. Camp is also where learning to swim well is prioritized; it is a Jewish mandate to teach children to swim.

And the making of lifelong friends is no small benefit either.

At staff orientation, Director of Summer Experience Rachel Csakany asked how many had been campers at some point, and a significant number of people raised their hands. That’s one sign of a great camp. Because camp is also for the almost 100 staff that are there to provide the kinds of positive experiences they had from their counselors. That is the circle of camp.

This summer is special in two more ways. First, in the field by the main pavilion, there is a new yurt structure, clad in what is fast becoming the official camp color, teal. A yurt was and may still be a structure most closely associated with Mongolian life, a large, usually mobile, round tent-like building with a sloped roof and large opening in the center peak. The yurt is the start of a yurt village, which will provide outdoor enclosed spaces, yet close to nature, for programs. This yurt will be primarily used by Elior, one of the JCC’s shlichot (emissaries) for her sessions of Israel and Jewish programming.

The second way camp is special this year is the participation of 13 Israeli teens in camp from the Eshcol region of Israel. Eshcol is a southern area of Israel that is in partnership with the Capital Region and was the area hardest hit in Israel by the Gaza war. The teens are part of a larger delegation of 41 teens from Eshcol and associated with ORT attending the two JCC day camps and Camp Givah of Albany’s Temple Israel. It is meant to provide a 10-day respite from the intense experience they’ve gone through that includes in some cases the loss of immediate family members. In addition to the camp experience, there are other evening and weekend experiences the group is having, and I want to extend gratitude and appreciation to the work and leadership of the Jewish Federation of NENY, especially Rob Kovach and KB Goodkin, for its organization and fund raising to make this vital experience happen. Also, thanks to all the host families for opening up their homes.

Two last items of note. The first is that in a follow-up to my last message, as a result of the concerted effort by the Jewish community and the leadership of Rabbi Matt Cutler, Rabbi Rafi Spitzer, former JCC president Michelle Ostrelich and myself, the Schenectady City Council determined that no such resolution on the issue of Gaza and the war would be taken up by the council. It is a pyrrhic victory in that serious damage has been done to inter-community relations by the insistence of activists on the other side that the council do make a statement on the matter, no matter the antisemitism embedded in the effort. For context, a follow-up op-ed the four of us wrote appeared in last Sunday’s Daily Gazette and can be found here.

Second, in recent weeks a new Kosher Market 32 has opened up in the former Colonie ShopRite located at 1730 Central Ave. Early reports, including that of my daughter-in-law, say the selection is expanded and fantastic. Even if you don’t keep kosher, it’s the place to go if you celebrate Jewish holidays with special meals, need challah for Friday night, or want Israeli/Mediterranean fare. Thank you Price Chopper/Market 32!

Finally, have a happy and safe July 4th! Happy Independence Day!
