An Unforgettable Journey Through East Cambodia!

Small Group & Private Journeys

Featured Hotel Royal Sands Cambodia

Our local team in Siem Reap recently conducted an inspection trip in the eastern region of Cambodia, visiting the provinces of Kampong Thom, Kratie, Mondulkiri and Kampong Cham. Our mission was to check the current condition and the survival of the establishments which we offer to our clients, as well as to discover new options that have emerged.

Our visit took us into the heart of authentic Cambodia, where the local way of life endured despite pandemic challenges. These provinces offer a genuine Cambodian experience with options for quality accommodations, thrilling outdoor activities, and cultural sightseeing, going beyond the iconic temples of Angkor. It is an excellent choice for travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure and for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.

Safe Travels!

Route Travelled

Kampong Thom - Kratie - Mondulkiri (Sen Monorom) and Kampong Cham

Kampong Thom

Conveniently located about 2.5 hours by car from Siem Reap via National Road 6. It is well connected coming from both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. While not as famous as other Cambodian destinations, it boasts unique attractions like the UNESCO-listed Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site with ancient temples and the scenic Phnom Santuk hilltop pagoda.

Kampong Thom - Kratie (with stop at Chhlong)

The 4-hour drive from Kampong Thom to Kratie offers scenic views of the countryside and local villages, with narrow roads meandering alongside the Mekong River. A new bridge has been built, eliminating the need for a local ferry, and ongoing road construction in Kratie is expected to result in wider roads upon completion, likely within a year. We stopped at Chhlong to visit a historical boutique hotel, located in a remote area.

Kratie It is evident that many local businesses and accommodation options have been impacted by the pandemic. Despite limited Western dining choices and modest tourist attractions, the town's unique draw revolves around the last remaining Mekong dolphins in Kampi area. There are conservation efforts promoting responsible dolphin watching. Tours typically last about an hour. For active travellers a responsible Kayak tours with a professional guide can be arranged as an alternative to boat tours.

Kratie - Mondulkiri (Sen Monorom)

En-route, the roads are in good condition and regularly maintained, with ongoing efforts to widen certain sections for smoother traffic flow.

Sen Monorom is primarily a destination for nature enthusiasts. It has also experienced some changes recently. While the pandemic affected the restaurant scene, there are still some coffee shops and eateries catering to Western tastes, especially for breakfast and local restaurants with various offerings.

On the hotel front, there has been significant growth in the hillside areas surrounding the city, driven by the local travel trend on nature destinations like Mondulkiri and Koh Kong provinces. While some resorts cater exclusively to locals, many have faced challenges due to the pandemic, leaving some unfinished projects and deteriorating resorts. However, we saw a few hotels that we can confidently recommend our clients.

For activities, beyond the incredible elephant experiences and must-visit attractions like the Bousra Waterfall, Sen Monorom Waterfall, and the local coffee and pepper plantations, the Mondulkiri/Sen Monorom region offers potential for hiking and trekking adventures. The Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, located approximately 90 km outside Sen Monorom. Here, you can embark on a real jungle trek, complete with overnight stays in makeshift jungle camps.

Sen Monorom - Kampong Cham

It took approximately over 4 hours to drive to Kampong Cham.

The city of Kampong Cham offers several attractions to explore. The Nokor Bachey Temple, a blend of ancient Khmer architecture and an active pagoda, reveals Cambodia's rich history and culture. Lady and Gentleman Hill, with pagodas and stunning panoramic views, is a must-visit. The central market, housed in a colonial-style hall, is perfect for immersing in local culture and shopping. The village is also well-connected by road, with a 4.5 to 5-hour drive to Siem Reap, a 2.5 to 3.5-hour drive to Phnom Penh, and a 2.5 to 3-hour drive to Kratie, depending on traffic conditions.
