Volunteers Needed for Housing Partnership

The First Parish State Street Shelter team passes along our sincere THANKS! to all our volunteers who stepped up as either a greeter or overnighter in service to our unhoused, asylum-seeking families at the State Street shelter the week of April 21-27.

We have been asked to step up to another week of service May 12-18. Can you help? Please click on this link to sign up and list “First Parish” as your organization.

Pizza & Fun Night

Friday, May 10 | 5 - 7 pm | Parish Hall

This is a family-friendly event, and an opportunity to come together in the spirit of fun and community. All are invited to bring their favorite game and their appetite! The event will feature Leonardo’s Pizza; participants are asked to contribute $5/person or $10/family to cover the cost of the pizza.  We ask that you RSVP by noon on May 10 to let us know how many will attend, and if you have any dietary limitations. Please email Membership Chair Mary Wheeler, with any questions or to RSVP.

Art Installation

Sunday, May 19 | 2 pm | Garden

First Parish is proudly partnering with SPACE as part of Re-Site 2024, a “site-specific, temporary public art and Portland history-telling initiative.” Wabanaki artist Maya Tihtiyas Attean’s photographic and mixed media installation will be displayed on the western wall of the Meeting House through the month of May.

On Sunday, May 19, Maya will offer an Art Talk after the service. Join us at 2 pm for a special event!

The Film Showing "This River Is Our Relative"

Sunday, June 2 | 12:30 pm | Parish Hall

The Wabanaki Ally Team (WAT) invites all to a Film Screening of the 2023 documentary "This River Is Our Relative" followed by a conversation with three Penobscot filmmakers and participants from Sunlight Media Collective. The film is about the Penobscot Nation's intrinsic kinship connection to and tireless environmental advocacy for the Penobscot River.

Join us on Sunday, June 2 starting at 12:30 pm. The WAT will serve lunch for attendees following coffee hour. Donations will be split between First Parish and Sunlight Media Collective. Dawn Neptune Adams, the film's narrator, will be our pulpit speaker that morning. Save the date - more details coming soon.

A Fond Farewell

During Sunday’s service we’ll bid a fond farewell to Childcare Coordinator Cheryl Blanchard. We’re deeply grateful to Cheryl for her warmth and expertise – and especially for all her hard work as the Religious Exploration program emerged from the challenges of COVID. We’re happy to know that we’ll still see her often here at First Parish!

Flowers are a Living Chalice

Consider donating flowers for the chalice table for Sunday morning service. Instructions are on the sign up sheet posted by the stairs in the Parish Hall. You may dedicate your donation as a memorial or to honor an event such as an anniversary. For more information, please contact Elissa Armstrong or phone 207-761-1704.

Ongoing Opportunities at First Parish

Share the Plate Nominations

Each month, First Parish shares the offering received during one Sunday service by making a contribution to a nonprofit organization whose work advances the mission of First Parish, to nurture the spirit, grow in community and help heal the world. To nominate an organization for that one-time contribution, simply complete this form. You'll also find printed versions in our Parish Hall near the stairs. Thank you!

Musical Sneak Peek!

Come at 9:40 am on Sundays for a first stab at the morning's hymns. Our Music Director, along with our First Parish Choir, will run through each hymn to allow all in attendance to learn the melody and form. There will be other tips that will give you the confidence to sing out during the service. See you there!

If you are not feeling well, tested positive for Covid, or have been exposed to Covid, please enjoy Sunday services from the comfort of your own home. Live streaming is easily accessible here. As a reminder, you can order free Covid tests from the government at this link.

Is Stewardship In Your

Long-Term Financial Plans?

Legacy gifts are an important source of lasting support for our church. The Trustees acknowledge these bequests on behalf of a grateful congregation. If you would like to know more about ways you can make a future gift, please email Austin Farrar, President of the Trustees.

 Pastoral Care Needs

If you wish to speak in confidence with a member of the Pastoral Care Team, please send an email to the office and a member will get back to you as soon as possible. The Pastoral Care Team is also recruiting a new Chair! If you are a compassionate listener, we would love to meet with you. Please email Laurie Hasty, PCT Chair, if you are interested!

Getting in Touch

with First Parish

It may take a few days to return phone messages, so email is the best way to reach all First Parish staff. Please remember that Laurie and Benjamin work part-time and may not respond to emails every day. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
